Alright, heres the deal. I've never been in a late war where the enemy was anywhere near as advanced as me. That said, in my current game where I am ahead of everyone, I attacked the evil Zulus, the second largest, and third strongest civ. The Persians were second strongest and joined me in the battle.
I landed about fifteen infantry, thirty cavalry, and twenty artillery in Zululand. One turn later my artillery and battleship fire had captured worn down the troops in two Zulu cities - including the capital. They were easily captured by my cavalry.
I poised myself to take a third, smaller coastal city as I landed my new tanks on Zululand soil for the first time. On the next turn as I moved my tanks inland I noticed a few Zulu infantrymen. Right-clicking on these, I found that there were at least thirty units here. Mostly infantry with a few riflemen and a coupld of swordsmen mixed in. I withdrew back to the capital city again with my troops virtually abandoning the other city. I had about twelve infantry, eight tanks, twenty five cavalry, and twenty artillery in the city with four tanks outside. There were two armies there as well - one with three legions and an infantry, and one with four infantry.
As my outside tanks moved into position to attack the Zulu troops they found another group of Zulus. This one, too, had about thirty infantry, riflemen, and swordsmen mixed in.
I wonder if you guys can help me based on your experience. Are these massed troops the bulk of the Zulu army, or just a portion? Does the AI go for broke in these situations and risk the entire military reserve? What I'm asking, I guess, is once I defeat these two groups of Zulus should I expect more of these or will it be clear sailing the rest of the way?
I will take heavy losses defending, but every turn I am creating eight tanks or twelve infantry, so I'm not too concerned with replacing the lost troops. I will be concerned, however, if every inch of territory will need to be gained by beating stacks of thirty zulu infantry.
