I don't understand how the "Flavor" works. I have read everything in the editor about it, but im still not sure.

Can anybody explain to me how it works, and maybe give me an example(it often makes it easier to understand)?

Thanks

Hard to explain...
It's a way to make Techs highly attractive for a Civ.
Flag a tech with the same flavor as a Civ (say, 'Arab' in the MA Conquest), and the Civ will always research that Tech before everything else, and pay an arm and leg for it. Nothing else, flavoring improvements etc has no impact.

What's really confusing, is the way flavor techs trades are handled.
Anyone can research anything.
The human can buy/steal anything.
The AI cannot accept Techs of a flavor different from its own.
For the human as well, Techs from his own flavor are extremely expensive. However, Techs from a different flavor have odd prices - once 2 more Civs know it, it'll cost something like 12gp, but the @1st or @2nd costs are regular.

That's not entirely true. If there's no favoured techs left for it, the AI will go for ones that aren't favoured.

It will reseach them (and even steal?), but you cannot sell it to them.

Yes you can. The only thing to prevent a tech trade is to have the Cannot Be Traded flag enabled in the editor.

No. Try it out. Middle Ages, AoD, FoR.
Easiest example is Middle Ages: The Rus start with Norse Traditions, but are Byz flavor. And you cannot trade a Viking tech to them.

Well I played an extended version of that same scenario, and I'm pretty sure I was able to trade techs with them. At least I was doing alot of trading, and eventually, almost every civ was fielding Assissins, a Muslim tech. The AI really likes that unit.

That's not completely true. It depends on how much they like the other flavor. Each flavor combination has a percentage telling how they like each other so if you have a very expensive tech that gives nothing but is the right flavor and a very cheap tech giving a lot of units the AI will research the cheap one if they just are about 20% compatible with the other flavor. But in the scenarios it's balanced so they will research those techs first.

@Theoden:
Sure, but I tried to keep the explanation short ;)

@Willem:
I know they'll research it at some point, and since I saw a game where the AI Turks ! built the HRE in time, I'm also sure they steal it (Western Church is flavored and not-tradable). But you cannot trade it to them. That's particularily tough in the Rome-version of FoR, where suddenly you cannot sell most of the Techs to the Barbarians, exactly the same plethora of techs you easily trade for when playing the regular FoR.
However, it could be possible they can trade among each others :crazyeye: , no way to check that by diplomacy, but if you see Assassins, maybe that's the reason.
