For gods' sake, SHUT UP NIMOY!

EDIT: Thank you everybody, I found it!

I remember doing this a long time ago, but can't remember how. There is a way to change the game so that even in single player Leonard Nimoy does not read the full tech quote but instead just says, "You have discovered blah-di-blah." And if I have to listen to that whiny guy say, "Art for Art's sake" one more time I am going to stab my eardrums out with an icepick.

I want to do this again. Can someone please re-tell me how?

But why would you turn off the tech quotes? :crazyeye:

Anyway, you can go into "Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets\Sounds\Tech" in your program files. You'll see a much of mp3s with the tech quotes. There will be a ton of techs called Tech_*techname*.mp3, and the multiplayer techs Tech_MP_*techname*.mp3. If you just move the singleplayer files to a backup folder you can take the _MP_ out of all the multiplayer files. Then it should play fine.

Because the way I am forced to acquire techs on high levels, he mostly says stuff like, "Do not - If you - You can't - throw the - speak the - direct the - arrow - truth - wind, but - which - have a - you can - will turn - foot in - adjust - against - the stirrup - you - your sails."

Also the tech splash screen is just an annoying pop up. I long ago memorized all the relevant information on that screen, and even some of the irrelevant information like where the quote comes from.

The reason I emphasized the term tech splash screen is because I found the option in the INI. It didn't use any of the keywords I thought it would, which is why I got frustrated trying to find it and came to you guys.

Anyway, thanks, but I found the obvious answer.

I usually just play with everything muted. That's the easiest way to eliminate any sounds that you may find annoying, as I don't really find any of the in game sounds to be that helpful to game play anyway.

That way you can just play your own music or have the TV on, and it has the added bonus of not annoying family or roommates if you have either.

Most of the music in game is pretty good, and you can add to the play list easily enough. I find the sounds associated with the following events helpful: "The enemy has been spotted near" (though that can get annoying, too), "X has reduced the defenses in Y," "X has declared war on Y," "X has made peace with Y," "X has completed a space ship part," "X has pillaged and improvement." These are things that might effect my game if I don't notice them in the event log, which gets really crowed late game, so the distinctive sounds are helpful.

In CvGameUtils find the function skipResearchPopup; at the end of it you'll want to modify it to say return True. That way you won't have the popup and the quote shouldn't trigger either (it's with the popup, I think). By the way, all the new techs with BtS are narrated by Sid Meier and not Nimoy, which is why "Art for art's sake..." sounds so bad.

I literally found the solution my self right after posting this.

The easiest way is to just turn it off in the INI file. My guess is that, at start up, the game checks the value of the "skip tech splash screen" and, if set to 1, modifies how that Python function you found is called. That is how INI files are typically used.

Thanks for the effort but I fixed it to my liking. Turned off the intro movie as well.

In order to turn this off, you must gather your party before venturing forth.

That "whiny guy" is Sid Meier, creator of Civilization.

This is actually one of the easier things to modify in the game. Just go to the folder with the sound files, and replace them with whatever you want (or just move them). I had a friend do all Simpson's quotes. Personally, I like the quotes, but YMMV.

I've asked this before, but no one knew the answer.

Is there a way to prevent the tech sounds from overlapping? Frequently I'll trade for 2 or more techs in the early game and I'll close all the tech screens. Then all the quotes will be playing simultaneously. It sounds terrible. I think this is what "Izmir Stinger" is talking about in post #3.

Note, I still like the tech quotes and want to hear them sometimes, I just don't want to hear them jumbled together.

Don't click OK until he is done reading the quote.

??? Is that a reference to another game?

I don't think this'll help if you have tech splash disabled.

I think it's hilarious to hear several quotes play over each other. It's certainly more interesting than hearing the same quotes every game. :)

Forsooth, methinks you are no ordinary talking chicken!

Oh, yes indeed. It's from another game. It reminds me of my Cousin, Tyllie Fleetknees, and the garden she had at the foot of a dryad tree in the Forest of Wyrms. I tell you, she went up expecting well-aerated soil and did she get a surprise? Oh yes indeed! Why, I remember it like it was burned into my memory with a flaming stick, which was very close to the truth actually...

Disabling splash screens disables quote reading as well. It defaults to the Multi-Player behavior, and he won't talk over himself.

That "whiny guy" is Sid Meier, creator of Civilization.

He is famous for creating a world renowned series of historical strategy games, and that is all well and good; I'm certainly glad he did that.

Leonard Nimoy is famous for his acting career, buoyed immensely by his pleasant, deep, gravely speaking voice. This is all well and good; I'm certainly grateful for Spock.

Only one of those two things makes you a good choice to read famous quotes for repeated playback in a game.

Minsc will lead with blade and boot! Boo will take care of the details.

What's this some kind of in joke? Those of us who aren't Baldur's Gate fanboys might see it as off-topic spam.

You're right. With tech splashes off you just get the "You have discovered..." messages over the top of each other which can also sound pretty funny if you get several at once. :)
