I've found several posts in this forum concerning the diffculties in managing the higher levels. For I'm a newbie, too (I play deity since three months) I'll tell the other newbies my strategy.

I play deity, raging h., map:125x80, no restart of civs, other parameters medium. I want to reach Alpha Centauri.
1) Try to settle as soon as possible, but look for a good city site
(a good site has 2 - 4 specials: Silk, whale, fish, pheasant, wine, gold, iron, coal, oil ....If possible, build it directly on the coast. So you can build a harbour and an offshore platform later in the game.
A good site, for example, is a river. If you build a city directly on a river it gives you a trade bonus and a defense bonus. This city will become a trade city, maybe your super science city.
If there's a goody hut, open it befor settling. Maybe there's a NONE unit in that will help you to explore your island/continent.
2)2nd settler builds roads to the 2nd (planned) city. Finally the 2nd city will be founded by him. Roads give you more trade. That means: Trade increases the numbers of beakers->the periods between inventing new techs will be shortened.
3)Go straight for monarchy, then go for trade. If you don't know how to, ask the civilopedia or the manual. Or members of this forum.
4)Build a phalanx (or a warrior, if not available) for garrison duty, then a warrior to explore. If your city has size 2, build a settler.
5)The new settler is bound for a new city to build. See 2)
6)Build a 2nd garrison phalanx/warrior, then build a temple.
7)Build another settler. Each city should build 3 settlers (except the capital): 2 for expansion, 1 for terrain improvement (TI)
8) The TI-settler should build roads, then mine hills. Important: first build roads on the shielded squares - have a look at the city window. It's no use to irrigate before monarchy. If you've got monarchy, you may irrigate the roaded squares
9)Build caravans, caravans, caravans. In the city with the best site begin to build a wonder, no matter which wonder.
Stockpile them for later wonders.
Try to get three 3 trade routes per city. (Have a look at the trade posts in this forum).
10)After trade, go to bronze, then the monotheism and literacy stuff.
11)After that go to invention. Ask the civilopedia. Then democracy.

Wonder Policy:
Try to build the Hanging Gardens or the Colossus. Try to build Marco Polo's Embassy or The Great Library, if MPE isn't available.
Try to get these wonders:Leonardo's, Michelangelo's, Copernicus' (same city as the Colossus), Isaac Newton's (in Colossus-city), Statue of Liberty, Adam Smith's, Hooverd Dam, SETI.
Nice to have: Pyramids, Shakespeare's, Lighthouse (if you're on a small island), Sun Tzu's (for warfare)
Don't build the Great Wall. A Diplo every 4th or 5th city will do the same (bribe the barbs).

After a certain amount of cities you have founded, the first citizen of the new founded city will riot. Don't bother. Make him an entertainer or rush-buy a temple.
Very important:
If you meet other civs, don't trade techs that are not on the described tech line (monarchy - trade)! You can do that later.
You can lose the game by trading "useless" techs!
Try to make peace, even if they demand money or a tech. If you do that, it is easier to make them allies.

If you managed to get MPE, you will know when an AI invents a needed tech (a tech you need to build a certain wonder).
Try to trade that tech at once. Maybe the next turn the AI will begin to build the wonder, and they won't trade the tech until the wonder has been built. Also try to trade maps.

Put some caravans on ships and deliver them to AI cities which aren't too far away from your island/continent. Learn about ship chaining.
Learn about micromanagement and the secrets of trade.
Ask the experts in this forums (I'm a newbie at deity, as I told you). They will help you.

When I manage to get the Statue of Liberty, I switch to Fundamentalism, setting the tax rate as high as possible, to make some money. Then I switch to democracy.

Maybe it isn't the optimal strategy, but it works. I've won nearly every game.

Another tactic that works fine too is this:

1. Set your science at the highest level you can.
2. Build as many cities as you can. Build them as fast as you can.
3. Build the pyramids in one of your first cities. Start building it very early in the game to be sure that you get'em.
4. Go for monarchy.
5. When your cities start to grow, build some warriors in them. They only cost 10 shields so it doesnt take so much time building them. They will help you keeping your people happy.
6. Start building wonders in your best production cities. Then when you get the techs that you need, change the crap wonders to the nice ones. Some that you should go for are:The Pyramids, Sun Tzu's War Academy, Great Library, Leonardo's Workshop, Maggellan's Expidition and the most important of them all: The statue of Liberty!!
7. When you have the statue, then change to Fundamentalism and set your taxes to maxium or at least very high. Build strong veteran units (you have the war academy) in almost every city and start to kill your enemies. You also have to build some settlers and some diplomats. Use the diplomats to buy the enemy cities that are too well defended.

You will not need to have any own research of techs, cuz you will get techs from the cities that you capture and from the Great Library.

OK I'm also new to the deity level (but I've been a Civ IIer for a number of years).

Some additional tips -- the outer ring of cities will need a good defender (a good OFFender is optional); the remaining units & interior "defensive personnel" aka police aka unrest minimizers can all be warriors.

Newbies can probably get two of the ancient WOWs -- the first to go are PYR, HG, LH, Col. My preference in order -- Col, HG, PYR. Second sweep is the 300 shield deals -- GW, GL, Or. Marco's & Cope's may actually compete at this stage as well. Tough call for a newbie -- I'd go for GL or GW. Once you've survived at this level, go for the SSC (see other sources for details).

Next wave of WOW's are Sun Tsu, KRC, & Shakes --- all good especially if you can put Shakes in with the SSC (& if the SSC gets large, put KRC there as well).

Set a defensible border -- nab the isthmus; place a city on a river; start a mine on a hill, then build a city with a second settler before the mine is finished. These will tend to be points where the AI may attack, but can be beaten back. Make it a priority to have barracks & walls for the key perimeter sites.

With a solid start, it will soon feel like a merely fast emporer.

:king:

why do you want to spend 200 shields on building the colossus?
Isnt that a waste of production? I think so anyway...

In the right city,The Collosus is very powerful. The cornerstone of a trading empire and the super science city.Once all cities have trade routes,caravans/freights should/can be re-supported from the Collosus city for huge bonus.

I think the colossus is one of the most underestimated WoW. If I had to chose between the pyramids or the hanging gardens and the colossus, I'd take the colossus ... I want wo win the science-race.

Best tip for newbies playing Deity...

Trade... Trade... and more Trade...

Build tons of caravans and set up three trade routes for everyone of your cities. And when you have nothing to really build, build more caravans. And when you have enough caravans, build more caravans. Your science development will be great, you will have tons of money to buy any city improvements or units that you need, and you will get most of the Wonders you want.

You will be surprised how easy Deity really can be. :goodjob:

I agree, in the middle game (around the time just before I start republic/Mike's to the period around industrialization) nothing tops trade, especially overseas. In a democracy I will let some cities suffer with almost no prduction just to keep a few boats on the water so I can continue trade (side note, I've just discovered the wonder of bribing other people's ships near their cities. Non-boats! WOO-HOO!).

This means that Marco is one of my critical wonders. Trading maps is well worth the gfting of techs. The time it saves me from looking for that distant Japanese city to send my gold caravan to is well worth it.

I also find Pyramids causes me a lot of problems. i have to closely monitor my cities to keep them from rioting. Better to use WLTP days. It's easier to control, and will catch you up with that pyramid civ eventually. You just have to wait a while.:D
