Coming from a former addict, try playing a game without building any. It'll really teach you a lot. I'm playing one right now on Monarch (also my first game on that difficulty level,) and as of 1200 AD, I've taken my entire continent, destroying 2 civs, have as much culture as the rest of the world combined (I'm going for a cultural victory.) And, at this point, I could choose whichever victory I want. Very different from my last game, which was at Regent, and in which I had to struggle to get any victory. I'm going to play out this game without building any wonders, but from now on, I think I'll abstain completely from the AA wonders in all of my games: I can get a lot more out of those shields than I get from the wonders, and they all expire in either the Middle or Industrial Age anyway. Without any wonders at all, this game has been easier than a Warlord game, it seems. I'm thinking I'll try the move up to Emperor for my next.

Yes, that's actually where I got the idea from. Just thought I'd post my experience on the boards here to encourage others to do so as well.

@ Bilko
I've been trying something similar my last couple of games.
Question...When you take a city with a wonder in it are you razing, or are you allowing yourself to capture the wonder?

I allow myself to capture it: I'm just not wasting any time building any myself

I was playing multiplayer recently as the Celts and followed my usual Celtic strategy of fast expansion/research Iron Working/get iron hooked up/make Gallic Swordsmen/kill everyone else!

When I established an embassy with the Sumerians, who were much bigger land-wise than me (just before I attacked them) I discovered that they were building the Pyramids. I knew then that I was going to win - building a wonder in the early game on high levels in 1-player games is a waste, but in Multiplayer it's suicide to lose all that production in your capital. Sumeria finished the Pyramids the turn before my Gallic Swordsmen captured their capital.

A good way to lose your "wonder addiction" is simply to play on higher levels e.g. Deity. For at least the 1st 2 ages, the AIs will get ALL the wonders before you, except possibly the Great Library, if you plan it VERY carefully. You are forced to focus on other things, which is very good - rather than getting the Pyramids and automatically getting granaries, you have to decide which cities need granaries, which can use a barracks immediately, etc, and your capital can churn out settlers or military instead of wasting all its production on a big flashy wonder.

I've had to change the rules a little bit in the game I'm playing right now:
The whole purpose in doing this was to not waste shields. So, in a city that already has every single improvement available, during peace-time and no earlier than the industrial age, can build a wonder. The reason: I'm in late Industrial Age right now, and two of my cities now have nothing left to build. I don't want to build units because I have to pay upkeep and don't need them, and wealth is a huge waste. Besides, I've already basically won the game a long time ago, and I'm just waiting for my culture to hit 100k now (at the current rate, it should before 1950, but I'm hoping to get there earlier if possible)

No, now I don't believe that any of them are. If I can go from struggling at Regent to cakewalking at Monarch just by not building any wonders, I think I'm ready to play Emperor, and without building any until the Industrial Age. Maybe not deity yet, but I have a feeling that even emperor will seem a little easy doing that.

Bilko : go ahead and play SID level :D. I dont know much about SID level, but it is beyond deity. And I just cant imagine how far you will be behind in tech without Great Library.
About great light house. I believe I can win in archipelago without it below emperor. But I'm not sure on emperor or above without it (especially if I am the only one on the island)

here is the link about sid

From what I read, most of advance players there trying to get greatlib wonder.

I never try (now, at least) to build a wonder before Sun Tzu's. Oh, I might try for Statue of Zeus if I have Ivory, but I've found at Regent and above it's very hard to get the early wonders without a GL. It was very frustrating at first, but once you get over it, your gameplay goes up.

Well, I don't know about that for sure, but I do know that I used GL as a crutch before, and now I'm always able to stay at tech-parity with the AIs just by trading, without the GL.

My point is : its depends on the level and on the situation. On regent or below, wonders addicts is fine. I could make 2-3 wonders (ussually Pyramids, GreatLight and GreatLib).
BTW, I read somewhere, on a game OCC the easieast way to win is by building wonders that produce a lot of culture points.

Well, of course, in OCC it is.
But I just won that Monarch Game last night with 100k culture, with wonders contributing less than a hundred of those points(built only because I didn't want to waste shields.) I won in 1946, and didn't even build any units after 1250. I just needed to keep Zululand happy so they wouldn't attack me, and that was easy enough with the huge tech lead I had gotten.
