This may have been asked and answered, but here goes:

Does anybody know what the little dots that are in the foreign advisor screen to the left of the leaders are? Someone asked me this, as well as my own curiosity.

One of the things Civ does is simulate the effect that disease has when Civs first meet. I am sure you remember that when Spainish conquistadors traveled through the land of the Incas that many natives got sick and died. This helped Spain gain control of the whole continent.

The dots designate those civ carrying smallpox so if one of their ships appears off your coast you must sink it or risk them landing and infecting your populace.

OTOH, it may mean that you have an embassy with that Civ.

in some screenshots i have seen lines connecting the leaderheads. i know they indicate stuff like peace treaty, warring status or trade agreements or MPPs. but i've never, never ever seen them in my game, in all versions and in default or custom rules! very annoying when i wanted to find out whether this civ had an MPP with another or not...or am i wrong?

 @jimmytrick

Conquistador how about placing a check on the lines you want displayed,on the right side of the foreign advisor screen.

Conquistador I just answered your question, place a mark on the lines you want to see displayed, and AFTER you have marked it,they will be shown.

you need to establis relation with them then...
doublic click on the start next to your capital an establish one.

If that doesn'T work then maybe you need to put a spy in there territory.

For some reason I can only ever use the foreign advisor screen to talk to 8 civs that are prechosen before I meet them. So in some games I have met several civs but have not been able to talk to them unless I clicked on one of their units and I cannot see any agreements. Is there any way to get round this?

One way is the little 'd' at the bottom right of the main screen. The other, is to shift+rightclick on one of the circles in the foreign advisor screen. You can then select which civ to put there.

Thanks! This will be very helpful in future games.
