Forest chops and replants

Does anyone know how many times a forest can be chopped and replanted and have it work? I think I have seen a forest in one tile give 10 shields multiple times, but some tiles only give 10 shields once and then forest chops won't do anything.
 
You can only plant & chop 1 time :( . When I first started playing I would
stay on the same tile and plant/chop continuously :crazyeye: until I learned
otherwise from the forums. ;)
 
I never understood why reforesting is exploitive in the first place. In wood producing countries such as Canada and Norway, they do it all the time!

Because in the game, you could "chop-rush" a wonder in 1 turn. Remember the caravans in Civ2?

I sure remember them :)
But the problem of chop-rushing wonders has already been taken care of by not allowing forest chops to contribute to a wonder.

What I'm talking about, is why replanting is considered exploitive and as such was removed from the game.
I mean, in Norway and Sweden they do it all the time: chop a forest, replant trees on the same land, chop the new forest again, and so on.

Instead of removing the option altogether, I think it should have been better and more realistic if the worker action 'plant forest' had some minimum number of turns. For instance, planting a forest takes at least 4 turns, no matter how many workers you put on the square.
 
It is unbalanced because it is way cheaper than any other forms of rushing. 13 worker turns cost 0/13/26 gold per 10 shields. Upgrading would cost 30 gold per 10 shields while regular rushing would cost 40 per shield.

you can't add forest bonus to a wonder can you?

And the "imbalance" is offset by the fact that you just used up 8-20 citizens, which could have been producing inside cities, or as they say in business, "an oppurtunity loss". All that work planting and chopping a tree could have been spent elsewhere building mines, irrigation, railraods etc.

I liked it, and didn't think it was an exploit at all. Oh well.
 
They should have changed it to once/turn. Each turn you would be able to plant and chop each square. This would have been a little more realistic imo

That was never an exploit. Merely a game detail that some people couldn't grasp. The world is full of forestries that are cut down & replanted continually. It is both natural, and good business sense. Too confusing for Firaxis though ;)

True, but in the game sense, you could chop and replant dozens of times within the same turn if you had enough workers. Firaxis probably cut it (pun intended) for several reasons:

1 - The AI doesn't know how to use that exploit. It just chops and irragates.
2 - If you think of 1 turn as 1 year, it's not very realistic to chop and plant an entire 100x100 mile forest in that amount of time. Trees don't grow that fast.
3 - It was a cheesy game tactic to get units, improvements, and wonders out quicker. Want to rush an improvement that has 0 shields? Just chop a forest, and rush. Then rebuild that forest for the next turn. This is also why caravans from Civ2 weren't in the game. They obviously didn't want it in there.
 
You should be allowed to replant and cut down for a bonus every 5/10 turns or so. Of course, it is kind of strange to think that you could make a bomber or artillery out of wood. the bonus shouldn't apply to all units and buildings except wonders.
