I searched for the first question and did not find specifically what I was looking for. Maybe it's already here, but I didn't find it. Haven't searched for the second yet, as it really just came to me a few minutes ago.

I am curious if any mods/mod comps out there mod forts so that naval ships can enter them? What I'm thinking of is something where a ship enters the fort and is treated the same as entering a city. The purpose of this so forts could be used like canals to "bridge" naval units across a piece of land. Either place one fort and allow a ship to get across an isthmus, or string 3 or 4 forts together to act like locks in a large canal and bridge a larger piece of land. It would probably be better if there was a way to limit the distance so you cannot build forts adjacent to each other. Then it would only be useful in an isthmus situation, which seems to happen a lot. Also, are there any other mods out there that allow canals in a different fashion that this?

The other question is how does one change the graphics used by a fort later in the game. I'm thinking of making the fort use the airfield graphic by Asio after flight is developed. I understand the Wolfshanze (sp?) mod has something like this already, but I don't know how to go about pulling it out of that mod, if that's even possible. This isn't that big a deal, as the planes can fly from fort graphics without a problem.

Naval units can already enter Forts in BTS if they're in your borders although you can only get a 2 tile-wide canal. Are you looking for something for Vanilla/Warlords or something that removes some of the BTS restrictions?

Hmm, I tried it in a game and my ships could not enter the fort. I'm using the History in the Making mod now, I suppose maybe it changed something.

I guess I'll have to do some more experimenting and see what's going on.

Thanks for the info Dresden.

One last question, and it's OT from the original. Nothing to do with forts.

Has anyone other than RogerBacon done anything with allowing units to fly over land and water? If not, does Roger's Flying Mod work with BTS 3.17? I have a dream to mod airships into something a little more prototypical, rather than just making them an early bomber, as Firaxis did.

What I'm thinking of is making Airships a civilian financial unit that grants gold revenue when it "lands" in a city. This would require some new work to make the ship behave more like Civ 3 and earlier aircraft (when a bomber could fly out and stay out for one turn). The idea is allow the airship to fly something like 4 or 5 spaces at a time, but remain airborne for maybe 10 turns or something. This would allow the ship to make flights around the world similar to the Graf Zeppelin's 1929 global tour. Everytime the ship would land in a city, an amount of gold would be generated based on the number of tiles between the current city and the last city visited (the arrival and departure cities). This gold would then be split 60-40, with 60% going to the nation that owns the ship, and 40% to the nation that owns the city. There might also be a bonus if the two cities are foriegn to each other (departure and arrival cities not in the same nation).

This would make the ship a superior scout/recon vessel, and generate some money along the way. As it is, the airships seem to be a bit limited as a simple bomber. Maybe in a military sense, that's about all they were, but airships definately did not reach their pinnacle in military service, or at least not as a bomber. Perhaps bombers was their best military use, but Civ isn't totally about military conflict.

BTW, I'd also like to figure out a way to allow them to carry fighters, to simulate the US Navy Rigid Airship program, the U.S.S. Akron and U.S.S. Macon. I know that's already been looked into in the past, without much success, I think.

[EDIT] I found the answer already. Looks like Firaxis added this feature in one of the patches somewhere along the line. Shows how long I've been out of the game.
