forts

TravellingHat makes a very good point. I personally always make a point to bring workers on all my military campaigns. Then once my SoD is adjacent to the enemy city I intend to capture, I have my workers build a fort while my trebuchets reduce their walling to rubble. Doing so greatly increases the survivability of your troops during the time it takes for you to bombard the city's defense to 0%, especially if you're fighting a mad dog like Shaka who WILL throw wave after wave of his troops at your SoD like, well, a mad dog.

So the new patch disallows fort building in enemy territory? Well, that rather puts the kiybosh on my forward command then. It would still be possible to camp on their border, but it'll lose a lot of its offensive potential.

Yeah it's a shame the patch will nerf something that is already the weakest thing you can do with your worker. I think the warrior is too strong, maybe we should take it's 25% city defense bonus away.

Unlike in Vanilla, Forts do not destroy terrain features now, so you can improve a 75% defense bonus of a forested hill up to 100%. Furthermore, since they count for many effects as a city, they allow city defense promotion to work, which award even greater defense boni. They are very useful in certain situations, the only problem is that the AI will avoid them. And I don't know why should you build one in enemy territory, since it won't provide any of its boni, not being able to build them is not a nerf at all.

I was under the impression the defensive bonuses of a fort do not currently depend on what territory they're in, so not being able to build them in enemy territory removes the possibility of a forward command (or, to be more precise, it'll be a slightly less "forward" command).

It's a while since I've actually used this tactic, so please put me straight if a remember incorrectly.

Does an unmanned fort clear fog of war to prevent barbarians or do you need a unit in there?

As far as I can remember you need a unit in the fort.

To be honest, I never tried forts against barbs. Mostly because my workers are busy developing the lands and that the barbs can come from any direction in the start. Also I don't go for Mathematics early. Try it out ;)
