Forts

I build barricades on every other square on my border, i usually put some artillery and a few good defensive units in each one. Then i keep all my offensive units spread out along the barricaded border, so when war invetably comes, im fast, prepared, and effecient. When the border moves up i use my captured workers to build a new line of barricades. It might not be THE most practical use of workers but it looks cool and helps me keep my units organized.

I build forts + barricades on every square on my border, and keep some old unit there just to stop cavarly rush's. I find the ability to stop a units movement in it's tracks extremly useful on the defense when i am playing a demo gov. It's mainly useful in the late middle age's up once every one has cavalry.

I can think of using forts in offensive wars. If I invade a country in another continent (overseas that is), and I couldn't find a good mountain spot for my landing forces, I could import many workers to the same spot & rushbuild a fort in the next turn. That could be my beach-head. In addition, when I start invading the enemy cities, there's almost always need for workers a bit afterwards.

I am disagreeing here with virtually everyone. I think are useful. The AI seems to outrush techwise in C3C at the higher levels. At some moment in time They have tanks, while the human might not have that yet. To get some extra safety fortresses are very helpful, especially if you also put in artillery.

My crusaders also build forts often. What else to do with them in a no-war situation ?

Right, and how do you manage to build Knights Templar on higher level ahead of AIs?
Cause if you do build it before them you sure can have tanks before them too...

Two different game situations? One where forts are useful when you are behind technologically and another where you are ahead but have a unit that cannot be used for anything but building forts?

Also useful to cover your back when going to war while having a long border with an untrustworthy AI country next to you.
