Fox-03 -- Trying to be Special

Turn 0 :
Take boss instructions on city designations
- Guangzhou goes financial and switches from lib to bank
- Shangai goes hybrid (Guess I'll put some watermills there), macau goes prod and beijing goes SCI

5 turns before peace treaty ends. Prepare troops already

- On great prophet points. Rome has 4 points coming from buildings so I can't turn off GP generation. Let it generate its GP then I will consider whipping there at will
I switch from market to confused academy in Karakorum. City already built a ton of Scientist points  . Let's try it though. Hire priest already in Karakorum

- Set Holcomb on cottages to help with growth

- Switch Beshbalik to market, extra happiness is good

- Antium is still building its walls  . Switch to theatre

- trade routes are wielding 62 golds. specialists will earn us 48 beakers with representation without counting the specialist related stuff

tradeMoney.jpg

1 civic change = 1 turn anarchy, 2 civic changes = 2 anarchy turns and 3 civic changes = 2 anarchy turns too

Hence, we go representation, bureaucracy and mercantilism. First turn of anarhcy

Turn 1 (1605 AD) : second turn of anarchy. move caravels and improve chinese country

Turn 2 (1610 AD) : Beijing is not building anything and don't bother to ask for one (is this a bug ?). I set it to courthouse
Guangzhou is financial. I must chain irrigation there or the city will grow very very slowly

JC has pitiful forces north. We'll deal with him in time
Cathedral costs 7 pops in Karakorum. Guess this is a bit exagerated. don't whip

IBT : Louis signs peace with Qin. Okay I'll be the one to wipe this guy from earth

Turn 3 (1615 AD) : start a bank in Hamburgh (no scientific buildings available)
Berlin starts a theater. We need those to play with culture slider
whip confucian academy for 4 pops in Karakorum. Rome gives a great artist. Send him to capital. We may need him for domination late game.
The wheat in Guangzhou is now irrigated. Set another farm and then start cottaging

Turn 4 (1620 AD) : Confucian academy done. Hire three priests. Karakorum generates 30 GPP and have 385/800. That is 14 turns. Let's cross fingers for the priest
Just check regularly in case some city governor decides he needs more specialists and screws things up. Only Berlin has more GPs in stock and is only 6 GPP a turn. All other cities generate less than 30 GPP

Turn 5 (1625 AD) : start taoist monastery in Shangai. As predicted, Berlin grows and governor hires an engineer. I ask him politely to burn his diplomas and get some happpy fisherman life on the coast
We got Steel, go Education. Steel makes Alex

AlexTradeForSteel.jpg

But I refrain. This is monopoly.

cancel peace treaty with Qin. I thought those were auto cancelled. Happy I checked
I declare war. Instant +6 angry in Berlin  . Waooo, these are really peaceful bunch.
Set culture slider at 20%
Move the stack to Qin place. I had a knight near to check forces.
:hmm: This is gonna be tough. Hangzou is defended by ... a longbow and a cat.

ChinaDefense.jpg

I was heading there with 6 cats and who knows how many CRII grenadiers
If we were attacking Athens (where the missionary is standing), it would have been another matter.

Athens and Macau are confused

Turn 6 (1630 AD): Okay, I have 2 knights ready to attack china. The first takes the longbow with 69% and win. Second attacks cat with >90% and raze China from map. Poor stack going home without having any fun. Okay, the good part is we are gaining a turn of 20% culture slider and many unhappy citizens.

IBT : Alexander declares on Asoka. Very intersting. Now I am tempted to give him steel, but it is still only DR and Printing Press on trade table.

Turn 7 (1635 AD) : Cologne get a theater.

Turn 8 (1640 AD) : taoist monastery done. Start taoist missionary. Cologne starts Ironworks

Oooh, Rome is generating 40 GPP. What the f***. I don't check 2 turns and it went that far already. Get it back under 30 GPP. No concurrence for Karakorum, I said

Turn 9 (1645 AD) : Macau finishes lighthouse and starts a courthouse.

IBT : Asoka offers nationalism + gold for Steel. Go home already

AsokaTechTrade.jpg

Turn 10 (1650 AD) :

Louis too has nationalism. I check the "what would make this deal work". not bad

LouisTechTrade.jpg

Alex offer is still standing. With more money now

Grey was right, tech hole was not that large after all. We can already be on par if we decide to trade steel. Education is due in 2 turns. We are running +15 at 30%. There is a lot of banks/markets in progress. Should get back to 50% science soon. We haven't built the FP yet but I am no good at choosing a place for this one. Let you decide.

The first confucian missionary, I will send to Karakorum. If we fail a prophet next time, we may need to set two cathedrals there and make 6 priests.

I will get this tonight or tomorrow morning.

What do you guys advise on the trade front? I would be hesitant to trade steel due to it's military importance but we really could get some benefit out of those trades. As we are going for conquest (or domination) then I don't think we should give any of the AI's help with their military.

It was interesting to see how the WW resumes where it left off when you resume the war on Qin. We will get the same thing when we redeclare on JC but I think we are in a better position to handle it now with Jails and Theatres.

Should I be declaring on JC as soon as we have a suitable force ready to take him out? I would like to take him out and then line up the french. We should bring Alex into that war with us to stop him from backstabbing us while we are at war with Louis.

Good turns, blid. Too bad about the SoD. You should at least let them plunder a bit. Enjoy the pillage. Or, what rex would have said: "Ride the women and rape the horses"

I suspect one reason why rex goes for steel is because it is something all the AI don't have. I think we should trade and get us on par. We are playing catch-up. I am not too concern with trading away military tech. The AI would sooner or later learnt it themselves. Unless you are planning to declare on someone soon, then you have an advantage of not trading to your target victim. Else, the advantage of monopolising a military tech is simply an illusion: an advantage is only an advantage if you made use of it.

I wouldn't be fast to return to war with JC. let us build up our economy a bit, and stack our armies better along the bother. Once you are confident of killing JC in less than 10 turns, then give JC a swift and deadly blow. The war has to be swift, else the WW alone will cripple our economy again.

I am still tempted to get Louis and Asoka to war. Let's see whether Alex would bring AsokaLouis to war.

Turn 7 (1635 AD) : ...

I have checked before this war started and Asoka and Louis won't declare on each other. Now that asoka is dealt with, we have the frog for us to care about.

Ah, and pay attention about the governors hiring specialists. I really would do with a button : "don't affect any damn specialist until I tell you so"

I favor trading steel too. Not to JC of course :) MAke sure you give steel to Alex though. We need him to cripple Asoka

Ok.. so not to JC. Give to Alex. He's fighting with Asoka so not to Asoka unless we want to be a prick and give it to both so they both destroy each other even more. And not to the frog as he's our next target. So I can only really trade it to Alex.

For these trades to really be beneficial it's nice to give to more than one person so how about I give it to Asoka as well? Or do they not have enough techs for us to trade anyway? I'll load the save up tonight and look into it a bit deeper.

Do you really believe that by not trading steel to JC, JC won't get steel?

Trade away with anyone who has something worthwhile in return to offer! Once you break your monopoly, break it with everyone. Else, the AI whom you traded with would trade it to everyone anyway.

@blid: sorry, typo in my previous post:

I meant Louis instead. But you have already answered me, Louis won't go to war with Asoka (But according to your screenshot on Loius, the Declare war on Asoka is not redded out?? :hmm:)... I am hoping Alex can bride louis though ...

--

Looking at screenshots posted by blid, how about this: trade Steel to Asoka for Nationalism, trade steel to Alex for Divine Rights and Printing Press, and trade Steel to Louis for Declaring on Asoka ... ...

--

GreyFox said:

No of course I don't believe that but I do believe in keeping the monopoly in military for as long as you can. I'd much rather fight against catapults than cannons.

Having said that, I will see what trades are on offer and I like your suggestions.

Peon said:

Yeah I would too ... like I would rather fight against Peons than Orge Mage ...;)

What I am saying is, if you are going to trade it, you no longer has monopoly. So, just look at what JC is willing to offer, okay? If it is worth it, take it. Else after you trade with others (say Alex), there is always a real danger that Alex will trade it to JC.

Sorry, I missed that. I have checked before Alex declared. I guess situation has changed since then. Louis is a friend of Alex and must be willing to help him

Anyway, getting Louis to declare on Asoka sounds good. What I hate is that Louis kept declaring and signing peace with Asoka without taking any cities. Hope Alex will be more successful

About JC, he is a bit backward and our next target. That's why I think we don't need to sell him anything. If he wants to research Steel by himself, then let him do. He will be missing economy techs or education

@Kikinit : remember variant, once we got Education, all science cities must swotch to uni

GreyFox said:

Bride Louis? What do we have to pay him to marry a guy? Might be interesting if you're into that sort of thing...:D

Anyway, I say trade steel to everybody. Who cares if JC has steel and upgrades 4 cats to cannons? We'll still outgun him 12 to 1. Besides, he'll have it next turn anyway.

Techs are for whoring.

Oh, and I went steel for the Ironclads. For a pangaea map, you just can't build enough Ironclads.

Righto.. That took me ages but I feel we are in a pretty comfy position by the end.

I started by whoring around Steel. The following trades were on offer.
-- Asoka would give Divine Right, Nationalism, World Map + 90g.
-- Louis would go to war with Asoka + Divine Right + World Map + 880g !!!
-- Alex would give Divine Right + Printing Press + World Map + 320g.

Obviously I can't take Divine Right fromt them all so I took the following deals:

Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

Lost the screeny of Asoka but he gave me Nationalism + World Map + all his gold (90 IIRC) + Convert to Mercantalism + Slavery. :smoke: on the last two but I just took everything that he could offer.

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

So in all we got 1290g + Everyone's world map + Nationalism, Printing Press and Divine Right for Steel. Not too bad. Maybe if I had saved a trade for the next turn I might have been able to get something further down the line. Oh well. That'll have to do ya.

I also renegotiated the wine deal with Alex for some extra gold that he had lying around.

Turn 240 (0) (1650 AD)
Tech learned: Divine Right
Tech learned: Nationalism
Tech learned: Printing Press

IBT:
Alex asks us to join him in his war with Asoka. I say no to keep our trades going. I realise the :smoke: in asking Asoka to switch to Mercantalism now as he won't have any trade routes with us now!!.

Alex has got some more gold available now so I renegotiate our other deal with him for this new excess gold.

At this point I went and had a look at the civics and they are a bit funny to me. Not sure of the reasoning and sick of Alt-Tabing out to read the forums, I choose to revolt to Pacifism (from Paganism! for the GP points), Universal Sufferage (from representation to buy things + the extra hammers) + Free Market (from Mercantalism for the trade routes). If this is not agreeable, it has been done early enough in my turns to be turned around by the next guy. 2 turns of revolt are the payment.

Lost 2 battles in that lot which were at 85 & 95% odds respectively. . But can't win them all I guess.

I also boosted research to finish Replaceable Parts in the next turn. We are running quite a deficit to do that but all the workers are standing around in the forests getting bored waiting for it to come in. When it comes in next turn they will all have something to do and research can be put down to a more reasonable level (probably 50%).

Some pics of the state of affairs:

Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

GNP is looking far better than at the start of these 10 turns. A little bit more and we'll be no.1. Once JC's cities are integrated that should be the case.

And finally the save:

Very very well played! Ok, as reward, I promised not to tease you anymore on your Peon avatar ... :mischief: ... for the rest of today

Now that JC is gone, no one have the circumnavigation advantage anymore. Good. In fact, surprised you managed to catch JC's galley, with circumnavigation, his galley should be able to run as fast as our caravel.

Although I expected our economy to bloom once Qin's cities are out of revolt and start developing, I didn't expect us to rise so fast in GNP. The tech leader, as I recall, was Asoka, and his GNP was very very scary previously.

Good call on starting the two wonders, and especially good call for the stone trade.

I believe we were in Paganism for lack of better choice.

I believe its also time for us to join Louis and Alex in the war, just for plundering, and also to reduce the once-GNP monster Asoka to nothing but a faint twinkle in history.

I will look at the save soonish .. so expect more comments from the grumpy fox, Peon (... opps, remmeber, promise!), Kikinit.

Very solid set Kikinit. That was a fast war with JC. Agree on tech choices too

Hope we stand a chance with Taj Mahal. Asoka had nationalism for a while now, maybe war will make him switch to military units

Not sure about civics change. I went representation for the beakers bonus, as I don't think we are in a position to buy stuff. Money should go to science. Just whip for the infrastructure. And pacifism is damn expensive with our army.
Agree that Free market should beat Mercantilism. It was not available yet in my turnset
Anyway, 2 turns of anarchy has a huge cost so we should try to limit them.

Karakorum has stopped working on prophet points :nono: Guess this was after the revolt

Okay, the Grumpy Fox reports:

- I see Cologne (HYB) building the Ironworks ... :crazyeye:, but since it has equal hammers as munich, and more trees waiting for mills to be erected, I would actually agree, and commend on the one who started ironworks there :goodjob:

- Karakorum: I thought we wanted a prophet? Suggest firing the engineer and add 3 priests instead.

- Macau could use a working boat

- Designations:
+ Cumae: suggest SCI
+ Neopolis: suggest HYB

I had a caravel so they move the same as a galley with an extra movement point and don't have to hug the coast.

Woops. Forgot to check about half way through and that after all your talking about it

You know, I always thought pacifism was expensive but it's not. I did a bit of an experiment by shift-entering and it's only 10 more expensive than theocracy, 20 more than paganism. I guess it wonders how much you value the GP points. It would be no more expensive than organised religion.
