I was wondering if anyone knows a good anti-virus/malware/spyware program that I could download in reasonable time on a 56K connection? (I'm only really able to get online for a few hours in the evenings)

Right now I have Avria 'AntiVir' as my anti-virus program, but its refusing to update. I don't know if the server is still going or what. The last successful update I did was actually last year :(

I have Ad-Aware and Spybot SD for the malware. Only Spybot is still updating, and even then it doesn't seem to detect malware that I've found with my out-of-date antivirus program, so that's not good... :(

I have my eye on Comodo Antivirus, since I've been happy using Comodo Firewall for about two years now. Their antivirus is a 36 meg download which is just about as big as I'm willing to tackle.

Well, thanks for reading this. Any thoughts and opinions are very welcome :)

PS: there is something that's got me spooked - my windows icon for PNG files has changed to old-style windows paint icon (frame and brush) instead of the XP square/triangle/circle thing. I can fix it with folder options: file types, but it keeps changing again when I reboot...

Ad aware has become **** imo since the 2008 or was it the 2007 version and the older ones don't update?
Anyways I just use windows defender ( also available for xp from microsoft iirc) for anti spy and adware/malware.
If that's not an option for you stick with spybot which is semi decent too ( it doesn't properly clean malware in normal mode, you have to reboot to safe mode for it.

For antivirus there's AVG free or Avast, I haven't used either as I use NOD32 but people seem to rate them both well but generally recommend avast.

For a Firewall I just use the built-in NAT firewall in my modem/router together with the windows vista firewall on my own pc and the windows xp firewall on my parents pc's... But I heard the xp one was ****, so I don't really know as I mainly depend on the NAT firewall in my broadband router...

Also for best security ask your mates/relatives/whoever with broadband to download service pack 3 for you and put it on a cd so you can update your windows built-in security too.

Unfortunately, I dont think there are many small AV programs out there anymore. Avast (which is what I use) is 25 mb to download, and I dont think you'll find many under that, at least not significantly.

malwarebytes.org

3.69MB

Perhaps you could download from somewhere else, and burn onto CD?

I just wanted to say thanks for the advice :)

I tried downloading AVAST, but after a two hour wait the install file was corrupted somehow :( (Firefox seems to do that with large downloads?). AVG does seem a little too big (twice AVAST's install file size). Unfortunately, I can't think where I could get fast internet access at the moment (yes its a very sad situation...)

I tried malwarebytes anti-malware, and it is pleasing, and reassuring. So far its only found one harmful file lurking in internet cache.
