when my brother was playing as the japanese, he found a bug that gives you free research. to work it, you have to have 0 cash and you are losing any number of gold per turn, be either communist, depotisim, or monarchy. once you have no cash, you get free research. you also cant have more units than you can support.

Only works for PTW and Civ III

maybe conquests, dont have it so cant check.

He must be playing on the lowest level, at higher levels the game automatically disbands units and/or sells improvements to make up for the shortfalls in gold.
