If it becomes obvious that another civ will attack you (units in your territory), put your tax rate at 100% and ask to trade their technologies with only money and in the 'credit mode', nothing directly . After that, ask to move their troops out of your territory. They will refuse and declare war in the same turn and trade stop during wars...

That won't work with patch 1.29f. AI isn't that stupid anymore.;)

I don't know about that... while playing PTW version 1.14f, I knew that the Arabs were going to attack me(lots of units by cities) so I made a deal, giving them incence for a cheap price. They declared war on me the next turn, ending the trade agreement.

Actually I saw this just last night:russians were heading to an undefended city of mine, just b4 they gave in to their greed I offered them 30gpt for mathematics, they accepted then I diplomed "remove forces or war" and they chose war:slay:

Mathematics won't save you if you are getting killed by the Russians; you should keep a large enough military that the other civs will think twice about attacking you.

Not really getting killed, just an archer and warrior diverting to a undefended town in the jungle.I have my first army (horseman)returning from barbarian duties circa1500bc for heroic epic activation and its a little out of position; I was trying to give the Russians a good reason not to go to war for a few turns at least,
but overall my military is strong, just badly deployed.(obviously the AI only cares about the soft target, not the potential repercussions)

That is true. A good way to get an AI civ to declare war on you is to put an undefended city next to their border. They see that it is undefended and they can't hold themselves back. It is like dangling candy in front of a child.

One thing to remember is that this ploy will only work one or two times per game. After you break a deal like this the AI will become much less likely to accept tech for gold per turn deals in the future.

Depends on how you do it, Woody.

If you give them the option "Leave my territory or declare war", they are the ones that declared war, thus they get the rep hit for breaking the deal. Your rep stays intact as long as you were not the one who actually declared war.

I agree.
It happened to me as i use to buy techs v/s gold per turn of an AI that had one city left surrounded by tons of foe.

The AI never survived to get the gold.
After i've done that 3 times, i tried it with a fourth civ, but they refused... They did not survive anyway :D

In my case (check the above post), it was never i who broke the deal, as the AI was razed by a third party.

PS: i wonder if there is already a thread regarding this... the rep hit i guess...

To get tech for "free" I usualy find one that only one AI player as.
Then buy it from them and then sell it to the other ... You can get the tech and some money ...
