Free video editing software

I'm meant to be editing some videos for my mum, but I can't seem to find any (free) software that does the following:
*Rotates the movie (i.e. make from portrait to landscape vice versa)
*Cut of bits when you accidentally filmed for too long

If anyone could point me in the right direction thanks

What OS are you using? I can't think of any for windows, but if your running Linux I have quite a few suggestions.

I'm using mainly windows, but have a ubuntu (not the newest version, whatever was newest in early 2005) partition I can use (but when I reformatted the windows partition, it got rid of the dual boot, so if someone can point out to me how to get into linux (I know I have to insert the CD and type somethign, but as I am lazy I haven't worked out what exactly to do yet)).
