I just get my hand on the PC editor and I tried to use it in Virtual PC. Everything works fine to create the settings I want but when I use them in my mac, civ3 unexpectedly quits when I reload the saved game.

If anyone has tried this before and have found a solution to the problem I would be very pleased if you were to share the solution with me...

Thanks already!

If you use VPC and the editor matching your version number (i.e. 1.17) you can edit the rules (make a new civ3mod.bic and replace the current one) but you cannot edit maps - or more precisely, you cannot play those maps.

HI,
Actually, you can edit the maps. I know because I did it. I edited the ruled - changed the Iriquois to a race of Elves called Sindarin. Changed the city names and edited the map. I mad a huge map - contenants with lots of goodies - extra resources and LOTS and LOTS of goodie huts. I like how it turned out. Makes expansion really easy.

And could you then play the map? The experience of at least half-a-dozen people I know of, using at least 3 different versions of VPC, has been that you can edit the map just fine and save it, but when you try and start it as a scenario, Civ3 has an error loading it and you have to quit. Exactly the same thing would happen for both 1.16 and 1.17, incidentally.

I haven't seen this, provided you're using the 1.17f version of the PC editor with the 1.17g Mac app. If you can create a map using that version of the PC editor that won't load on the Mac, let me know and e-mail me the busted map (bradman@pobox.com).

Hey Brad hell-o...

I was wandering if you knew what cause my "mac civ3" to unexpectedly quit when I try to reload a saved game from a pc edited bic file?

Thanks already and by the way, thanks for working freely for all of us. I don't have much skills with programming but if you need some help with something else, well just give me a sign...

Without further data, my best guess is you're using the PC editor that came with the 1.21f patch. The Mac version (at 1.17g) has no idea how to cope with the later data format.

Does anyone know where the 1.17f PC Patch and Editor can be found now that the 1.21 update is out?

I'd like to try editing with VPC, but all I can find is the new update.

Anyone? Thanks.

Hi,
There is a hacked version of the editor on Civ Fanatics. Check the PC Message Boards - that's where I got mine. If you can't find it, I could stuffit and e-mail it to you.

Unfortunately that one is in .ace format and Winace makes my VPC crash. Maybe you could stuff it and post it here as an attachment?

P.S. Further investigation of my Civ3Edit.exe reveals that the file got corrupted somehow - this may have been causing my problems earlier, so I'd like to try again with a fresh copy.

Hi,
The file is too large (even stuffed) to upload to this thread (it is 728K and the limit appears to be 500K). However, I am happy to e-mail it to anyone who wishes it. Just send me an e-mail <ferretloverdc@earthlink.net>

Ha.

It was nowhere to be found, until I found it on Firaxis' Site. I feel a little foolish. :)

For anyone interested, it's here:

http://www.firaxis.com/downloads_detail.cfm?file_id=44

I haven't actually tried using it yet, but it did successfully launch (this is a plus), and this one IS directly from the source. I can't wait to start messing with it (I'm thinking I should probably go run my errands *before* I start, or they won't get done today).

Maybe I'm nabbing the wrong file (or maybe my Civ3Edit file is also corrupt), but I can't even get the editor that I downloaded from this forum to successfully launch (well, after several tries, it launched once, but it crashed almost immediately).

I'm interested in the hacked editor as well so I'll be sending you an email, ferretlover. I appreciate the offer.

Thanks for the help.

Well, I got the version Ferretloverdc's been using, and the behavior is exactly the same, and 100% reproducible:

1. In VPC, use Civ3Edit to make a map.
2. Quit VPC and start Civ3, load that map as a scenario.
3. Save the game.
4. Reload.
5. Note that when the load reaches 57% it complains about a "DataIO operation System Error TINU" and does not load.
6. Attempt to continue, notice total graphical garbage appearing all over the screen as soon as anything is done.
7. Attempt to continue a little more, get a hard freeze.

It makes no difference whether you quit before reloading or whether you try and load an autosave. For that matter, if you try to load a game from a nonedited map after starting the edited one, you can see little spots of land all over the world and shortly Civ3 will stop responding to the mouse at all (still responds to the keyboard though, so I can at least quit).

Brad, I've sent you a copy of the above and one of the maps that makes this happen.

I see the problem now. The Mac 1.17f/g patches don't include an equivalent 1.17f/g civ3mod.bic file. If you have access to a PC, you can just copy the file over from a 1.17f/g installation to your Mac to fix it. I think this'll be sorted out with the Mac 1.21f patch as I've made sure to include the updated file in it.

Excellent, thanks Brad! Now that only leaves the problem of getting ahold of that file. Maybe someone who has access to it could post a copy to this thread?
