Frozen computer

This is kind of a strange problem. If I can get the game to launch, it seems to play without any problems. However, often when I try to launch the game my computer freezes up. The mouse indicator disappears, a black rectangle fills most of my monitor screen, and the keyboard becomes unresponsive. The hard drive light never flashes, and nothing changes, even as the minutes go by. Eventually, I have to re-boot.

I have a similar problem when exiting the game. I seem to close out okay, but am immediately faced with the same frozen keyboard and screen situation.

This is has happened to me repeatedly. I'm at a point where I don't even want to try to play the game. :(

Is anyone else encountering similar problems? Is this a bug which might get worked out by either Firaxis or Steam in the coming days or weeks? Or is this possibly a conflict with background programs running on my computer?

BTW, my computer has a quad-core processor with 8 gigs of memory. I'm using 64 bit Windows Vista

Oops... I didn't realize there was special tech support forum. I am very sorry for posting here.

What graphics card do you have?
Are the graphics driver up to date?
The J, thank you for moving my post to the correct forum. I am ashamed that I missed that this forum existed.

I took your suggestion and updated the driver for my video card, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Okay... I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to these things. My video card is an ATI Radeon HD 4650. Is that too wimpy?

I'm kinda annoyed that I have to keep saying this - but 'up to date' drivers do not always mean the 'best drivers for the job'. Asking for the drivers they have is much more important then if they are up to date. For instance to play SCII I had to revert to an older Nvidia driver to even get the game to play at a decent frame rate - same with FFXIV.

No, that card should be okay.

You may be right, but at the moment we essentially don't know anything about possible problems, so we have to assume, that the newest driver is the best one, until we get reports which say something else.
