FS2- The Soviet Union

Space Race on, due to reasoning outlined by me above.
Diplmatic doesn't really matter, IMO, so off works for me.
Caty as leader, as she strikes me as the one more conducive to warfare.

Turn 1- 4,000 BC

:) Now begins the glorious Soviet Union, champion of the People and the Worker’s Paradise!

Chairlady Catherine is elected by popular majority of the People, and immediately orders that the city of Moscow be founded. The settlers do so, and so is the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics born!!

People from a nearby tribe grant us the knowledge of Archery, where we can kill things from a distance! SCORE!!!!

Moscow isn’t so bad…I start up an archer and send the scout out exploring. Need…good…defense…c’mon Farae, you can overcome your normal errors!

ARCHERY

Turn 2- 3,960 BC

Our Scouts have reported rich new lands to be brought into the Soviet fold. Long live the Workers!

Turn 3- 3, 920 BC

Nothing happens in these quiet years, but the People are ever watchful…

Turn 4- 3,880 BC

Moscow has expanded and new lands know the paradise of Catherine’s glorious rule! Now Moscow shall grow, expand, and be the foundations for a Soviet Empire!

Turn 5- 3,840 BC

A strange people called the Greek are found in far away lands. Their capital is called “Athens”. What an odd name. Their leader, Alexander, is oppressive, arrogant, and has some odd ideas about government. We should free his people in time.

The Greek people must be liberated from their oppressor!!!

Turn 6- 3,800 BC

Little happens, once more, all the world is silent…

…except that we get 29 gold from a village and thus we are doing even better. :)

Civ4ScreenShot0063.jpg

Turn 7- 3,760 BC

The people are becoming interested in Archery, the practice of killing things from a distance. Sounds like great fun!

Turn 8- 3,720 BC

A tiny lake…maybe we can use it too settler in later years.

Turn 9- 3, 680 BC

The lands of the enslaved Greeks have been found. Chairlady Catherine is all ready dreaming of when Soviet liberators shall rush over this border and seize Athens!

Civ4ScreenShot0064.jpg

Turn 10- 3,640 BC

The birds are heard chirping in the great expanse of the world…

Turn 11- 3,600 BC

The people have learned how to “farm” thanks to the practice of “agriculture”. Now, Moscow can grow its own food and we can feed more people!

Civ4ScreenShot0065.jpg

Turn 12- 3,560 BC

Moscow’s people grow anxious. What if some barbarian came and took a defenseless Moscow and ended the Dream forever? The people begged Chairlady Catherine for an Archer!

People have heard whispers of “religion” the concept of higher, more powerful supernatural beings. Catherine has vowed that her people shall not have religion, and whispers of faith are actively being suppressed.

Civ4ScreenShot0067.jpg

Regardless, all of Moscow came out in red to honor the fallen Scouts who were murdered by wild bears. Catherine has made a speech honoring the brave Scouts, and they shall surely forever be remembered by the Soviet people.

The Fallen Scouts
Civ4ScreenShot0066.jpg

Turn 13- 3,520 BC

Little has happened in these years…

Turn 14- 3,480 BC

Archery, which before was only known of, is mastered! The First Archer shot the First Arrow and it was glorious to behold! He felled a wild deer in one shot! Even now its mean cooks in Moscow, waiting to be served in a celebration feast for the discovery! Sadly, the First Archer shot the Second Shot a bit awkwardly, and it nearly hit Catherine in the skull. She then took his bow and shot the Third Shot at him. Even now, his body is being roasted in Moscow for the celebration feast!

A new Scout party has been queued to explore this vast world!

Turn 15- 3,440 BC

Aside from some archery accidents that took place in the euphoria of a new discovery, the World is silent.

Turn 16- 3,400 BC

Why must peace reign!?!?

Turn 17- 3,360 BC

Catherine shot a dove today. She claims she hates peace.

Turn 18- 3,320 BC

The World is boring…so we need WAR!!

Turn 19- 3, 280 BC

The Wheel, a round stone disc that moves carts, has been put into use by the Soviet people. Catherine boasts a mighty cart that carries her high and majestically, nearly a foot above her people!

Civ4ScreenShot0068.jpg

Turn 20- 3, 240 BC

Long has Farae reigned as Prince under Catherine, and advised her. But now, it is time to step down! A new Prince shall take the mantle of the Soviet people! Long live the Soviet Union!

PS: Do not count the fact that you arrive with a red button to press and move on as a turn. That is counted as your preturn.

Moving Forward…

Some resource locations

Civ4ScreenShot0069.jpg

We should try and grab these. They will provide great wealth and power, and we need a strong empire that can survive on its own if we want to dominate. So…I hand the mantle on to Vovan!

[0] 3240BC - I think we need to research calendar ASAP, so we don't have to pass the turns over at weird dates like 3240! Also, looking at those sheep makes me want to have Animal Husbandry now. :) (BTW, I find it terribly unfair that we must build the Kremlin, but cannot use Universal Suffrage, which is the only civic that makes the Kremlin useful. :D Not complaining, mind, just pointing out the irony here. ;)) Aaaany way. Not a whole lot for me to do here. *click*

[1] 3200BC - A glorious band of scouts is trained in Moscow. They will continue that which their slain comrades have started - the exploration of the frontier. In the mean time, the able-bodied men of Moscow-city are rallied to train in the arts of agriculture, road-building, and animal-herding - all those things that form the backbone of a truly glorious nation. We reckon they will be ready in about 400 years!

[3] 3120BC - Rumors are heard in Moscow streets about a new ideology - Buddhism. The messengers of the new religion are promptly dealt with by Catherine's secret police.

[4] 3080BC - Our scouts visit a native village West of Moscow and are rewarded by the welcoming local populace with gold. And a view of a pack of wolves across the hill. The population of Moscow is watching intently the fate of its comrades.

[5] 3040BC - Our glorious scouts once again show the superiority of our nation, and its strength in the face of fierce nature. The wolves are defeated, only to reveal, however, some bears! We find it reasonable to advise the scouts to avoid the bears.

[6] 3000BC - The influence of Moscow city in this world once again expands, revealing another native village on the south-west fringe of the city (and a pack of hungry lions nearby, too). The bears are chasing our scouts through the wilderness.

[7] 2960BC - A glorious year, indeed. Some scouts of a yet unknown nation appear at the borders of the great Moscow city, and pass us the best regards from their leader, Mao Zedong.

01-Mao.jpg

Additionally, our scouts have been able to outrun the bears. They are promptly instructed to enter the indigenous village recently revealed, lest they fall under the influence of Mao. Certainly we trust and respect our comrade, but one cannot take any chances even with a friend.

[9] 2880BC - The scouts reach the coveted village, however the locals can only provide us with a map of the southern region. The map does not reveal any locations of more settlements, so we ... *disband* this village and move on.

[10] 2840BC - It was our plan to let the scouts rest a turn, lest they are ambushed by animals, in their disordered state, but a pack of lions shows up nearby immediately. We cannot take the risk of staying in place and so keep moving through the plains, as far away as we can.

[11] 2800BC - A band of workers now feels ready to leave the safe premises of Moscow city and start improving the nearby lands. We order another archer division to be trained, for by the time they are ready for combat, we expect Moscow city will grow substantially and be ready to start preparing the strongest of Russians for a venture yet untried - to set foot in the wild lands of the outside world and help expand our glorious nation. The scouts seem to be in relative safety and are ready to take a well-deserved rest to regroup.

[12] 2760BC - The Chinese scouts tell us of a wondrous material they call copper. They say you could make strong spears, axes, and other weapons with it to rule the battlefield, and set foot out in the wild without fear of the animals. We wouldn't know, however, as we have never encountered this 'copper' anywhere near Moscow, nor anywhere else in the known world. We do, however, start studying those curious animals frolicking on the hills NE of Moscow, wondering if maybe we could tame them so we can catch them without much effort - for they are tasty indeed.

Another news that comes in tandem with description of 'copper' is the idea that you could *force* people to do your bidding. Catherine really likes that idea and orders that we immediately incorporate it into our system of governing the people. For fear of death, I, naturally, comply.

[13] 2720BC - Our government is reestablished and Slavery is the word of the day.

[14] 2680BC - Our scouts have fully recuperated and are ready to move out again.

[19] 2480BC - The archers are ready to march out in Moscow a little early, thanks to the recent development of elephant-hunting grounds. For one turn before Moscow grows, we decide to start building the Barracks.

[20] 2440BC - Moscow city grows to size 4. We start work on Settlers. BTW, I can't bear to witness these nasty numbers. I simply must play one more turn. :) I hope my comrades will forgive me.

[21] 2400BC - Ahhh... Much better. Animal Husbandry is discovered. I will leave it to JOE to figure out where we need to go next. ('Course it's up for discussion, too.) I suggest Pottery or Iron Working might be a good idea. it'd be great to put some cottages on those flood planes of Moscow, but it'd be also good to know pretty soon if we have any metals at all anywhere close. We do have horsies, and that's nice, but iron would be better still.

Demographics show that we are above average in every meaningful category, though not yet at the top. Not yet. We do have higher score than Alex and Mao, though. ;)

Good luck to JOE.

Also, if you guys could, like, post the roster at the end of the turns, that would be super-awesome. I, personally, find it sometimes hard to keep track of who's up otherwise. :) TIA.

Roster (Closed):

2) Vovan << Just Played
3) JesusonEez << UP
4) Strauss << On Deck
5) Therat

I wonder how you could manage it to go such a long way to the coast on a continents map.

Looks like we're going to have some nice locations for early _worked_ cottages without the need for farms around moscow ... floodplains. Great to achieve one of our goals.

What I'm askink myself: What to do with those woods? Unfortunalely there isn't _any_ wood without river nor any hill to be mined in range of moscow. Normally I tend to chop all river forests but when we do this, we will have no production left. I would suggest to leave those 3 forests north (production without loss of food) and one on a plain south making all in all 4 for 2 additional health and 5 additional shields, with lumbermills later on more, of course.
Those forests to be chopped (the plantation forest first) anyway should be chopped early for the rushing of a settler or the oracle (for code of laws). As we're creative we don't need the stonehenge or obelisks at all. So spare the myst path! :)

What do you think?

I hope you're going to scout some nearby lands as well, otherwise it will be hard to decide were to put the important first settler.

had a look at the save, would go for pottery (cottages for flood plain are usually a good idea) then iron working then writing etc

send out that 2nd archer that is in Moscow, he doesn't need to sit in there. We need to send out our units to explore the next best settling spot, send him north.

Also, a fast chopped 2nd worker never hurts.

I usually don't build my second worker in the capital for a simple reason: Waste of the most productive city.

My build order in the capital would be usually: worker, two warriors/archers until my capital is size 3, sometimes barracks with raging barbs and/or warmongering, two settlers, another archer and an early wonder, most likely oracle to gain an expensive tech (code of laws ideally for courthouses if your want to have more than 4 cities) in the beginning. Here we may rush alphabet with the oracle as we don't want to found confucianism, do we? ;)

Second workers and third settlers (and following) are built by cities with most food, usually fish/clam/pig cities. You need not have a high production for workers and settlers but for anything else, like military or wonders. Thus, never build too much settlers and workers with your capital as it is in the beginning most often most productive.

Nastrovje!

Yes, I should have sent the second archer exploring. :)

On the issue of the ocean - there's some apparently to the SE. The continent might continue directly east of Moscow, however, as per the screenshot, or then again, it might not. :)

Amazingly enough, I was just complimented by a Civ God whom is indirectly responsible for the existance of my RB and CivFanatics account. :)

And please, do not forget....

WE MAY NOT FOUND ANY RELIGIONS

Thus, getting Code of Laws must wait until Confucianism has been founded.

I don't think we should get alphabet with the Oracle. If not CoL, it should be metal casting which is relatively expensive.

That's not me, I hope. I'm mortal. Also it's easier to communicate with me if I'm not up on some kind of pedestal. :)

There is one conundrum in the "Dedicated Athiest" concept: You have to get to Theology quickly, to keep out all those foreign religions, yet how to get there quickly when you cannot found any of the religions? What I would do is just ignore any religions that do make their way inside. No temples, etc, no state religion, no problem.

 that should make you happy, no? after all our discussions and rants, I am still captivated by the game. And I am still playing the warmonger way, slowly figuring how to beat the AI that way.

Back to topic. We have found our comrade Mao Zedong already, we should and try make friend with him as much as we can. He could support our course.

As for religion, we simply don't care whatever spreads to our empire. Theocracy as soon as we can.

Btw.. I think theocracy only prevents religions from spreading to cities that already have your state religion in it.. so if you have no state religion, and adopt theocracy, then all religions can still spread to your cities..

No, Theocracy will definitely stop religion spread (when you have a state religion). No random spread, no missionaries, nothing. Not sure if it works properly when you run it with no state religion, though. It should, but I cannot vouch for whether it does, not having seen it yet.

ThERat: If you're still playing, there must be something in it for you. You could go back to Civ3, too, so that you are playing this much Civ4, well... I'm not sure what it means, but it can't be all bad.

Fine, fine, you and Sulla can have your "mortality". :)

ADDED

I think we should get Metal Casting with the Oracle. It costs a lot and forges are a huge benefit to high productive cities.

Alternately, we could get Alphabet and use it to milk out technology before other civs get that bonus.

Regardless, this is JesusonEez's decision...just hope he remembers us over here! :)

I did a test.. and understand why I got confused.. I see now that you yourself can spread any religions to your own cities during theocracy (even non state relgions), but you cant spread any religion in other civs cities, even if they dont have a religion, when they are in theocracy.

I tested with missionaries thou.. dunno if religion can naturally spread to cities with no religion when in theocracy.

Great i just subscribed to this thread this game looks like it's going to be interesting so ill be lurking around. By the way could the person who's playing post a screen shot at the end of their turn of the entire empire just so that we can see what kind of improvements and buildings are being built in each city. Thanks
