One thing about no tech trading and a vague diplomatic AI is that there is no reason to keep AI around.
I chose Germany to play because I wanted to force myself to attack with free units. The level was king. I gained 4 free warriors and gold. Ancient ruins gave me a map that allowed me to discover the Great Barrier Reef, which counts as 2 happy, if you see both parts of it which I did. Next 3 ruins gave me 80 gold and 30 culture enabling me to open the honor branch and a free tech, pottery. Barb hunting also enabled me to make friends with Geneva and I bought the alliance for 250 gold netting me 8 culture per turn and an iron resource that allowed me to build two swordsmen.
One barb camp I cleared had a Russian worker, that "Russia would be very grateful if I returned it to them." Yeah, right. Russia, Egypt and Siam are on the continent along with Warsaw, Geneva, and Edinburgh. (By the way, that statue is still there in the background of Siam.) Siam warned me about troops massing on his border, but I was nowhere near him, in fact he had 3 units and a settler near me!
I had open borders with Russia and he parked a spearman on my route toward Hamburg preventing me from building a road. Blocking like this is not fun. No reason I shouldn't be able to road that hex with a civilian unit. By this time, Russia had 4 cities and was upset that I planted my 2nd city 7 hexes away, and cancelled our pact of cooperation, whatever that was. Meanwhile, she had a settler moving north of my territory that I could not block. I declared war on Catherine.
I moved 2 swords, 1 archer, 1 spearman and some warriors in an attack on Russia's ally, Warsaw. I ultimately, puppettized Warsaw and St. Petersburg and I'm healing up for the attack on Moscow. Adding puppet cities does not increase your social policy costs, so it's better to let the puppet build some infrastructure before annexing.
I made resource deals with Egypt and Siam. I also made a research pact with Siam. The diplomacy interface tells me I have 2 deals, but not what they are! Better take notes next time. I find myself using promotions to instant heal after making near suicide attacks on cities. Whatever damage the attack causes is free because I can heal at the end of the turn. (I had unused promotions before the attack).
Double experience from Military Tradition is very valuable. Once my scout got caught by a barb galley, who bombarded me for 1 HP, but I healed to cancel it out. So, I could just sit there and collect 4 EXP for the unit and towards a great general. I had so many workers, I had to disband some because there was nothing for them to do.
I played 115 turns, up to 0 AD! This is not the demo.
