Just a few turns earlier.
Changed things up a little - Persia, still, but with Mongols, China and America as my opponents. Also, 70% water (don't need all the space for research and it makes trading easier cause things a little more compressed - I've also noticed that you get more food clusters) and, apparently, wet/temperate. I'm not sure why I had temperate instead of warm.
Set up mapfinder and got a ton of great looking starts - 20 or so 2 cow, 5 or 6 3 cow and a 4 cow. None of them yielded an early SGL, so I went through the 1 cow ones and got one that had 3 cows, a bunch of hills and bgs and rivers - not coastal, but makes 32 spt at size 12. A powerhouse, in other words.
Got my CB SGL for pyramids and ran onto Mysticism, then the plan was alpha->Writing->Lit->CoL->Philo. Got a 2nd SGL for Alpha, which became Oracle and then a 3rd SGL for writing. I had to think then - I didnt' want to kick off a GA with GLib when I didn't have any other wonders to build, so I detoured to Poly and continued expansion. Took ToA then went Lit->Republic.
By the time I had that, I had found ivory on the other side of the world, traded for MM and sent a galley/settler/worker combo to pick up the ivory.
Rest of the game was uneventful, except for endless leader fishing - I was at war for much of the game once I hit the MA and didn't get the leader until 900 AD
then, of course, I got several more in succession.
America ROP-raped me (ineffectively, of course) after awhile and so I took them out.
Got a 4th SGL for mass prod, which I used for SETI.
I still think a mid-1300's date can win, but boy is it painful to deal with the fishing...
