...what are your thoughts about 5 x 20 on Standard, at Monarch Level?

I've given this a go at the weekend. I planed poorly in the first game and ended up with a runaway capital that I couldn't halt. My second game is much better-I should manage it (it's now down to the timing of culture builds to synchronise the finish) but it'll have to wait 'til next weekend now before I finish it. No early SGLs either so maybe with a bit of SGL luck it could even be possible at Emperor!

@RFHolloway: That must have been very annoying. Are you playing Babylon? Also do you bank on getting an SGL for the Pyramids first?

I used had that happen to me near the end of a 20K game for a gauntlet!!!!

10 turns to go, I decided to plant a spy in russia... why I did that, i am not sure. Catherine gets pissed, 2 turns later I get marines in my undefended capitol...

Fortunately, they didnt' raze the city, so I was able to take it back.

Yes to babylon at monarch the extra culture speed helps - hoping for a SGL, you can get Masonry first so its a SGL chance, with something to build if you get it. Really could do with a start that gives me an SGL by republic though.

I'm at 1850 in my game, I've just entered the Modern Age and I'm set for a 1991 finish. I guess a couple of turns will be shaved off that but I'm not going to match your 1960. I had a very unfortunate Middle ages cascade that lost me the Sistine Chapel (by one turn ) and Knights Templar. Other Wonders the AI got were Sun Tzu, Leo's and ToA. I have yet to see an SGL.

I finished in 1984.

I did eventually get an SGL, for Miniaturisation.
On reflection I kept a lot of military that I didn't need once I had gained the upper hand, so I might have been able to research a bit faster and hence improve the date by another couple of turns.

Finally a bit of luck - popped a SGL from feudalism, Pyramids 4 turns from complete, so ToA and Pyramids acheived, GA triggered, now into the culture rush.

Note to self - don't forget to build enough military to deter sneak attacks.

Sorry for not replying sooner but I've been away this week. Congrats on your game, Bartleby; losing out on Sistine must have hurt a bit. That's what makes this level a good 5CC challenge though.

I couldn't agree more as our games deserve to be there IMO!

Edit: ["off topic"]Just finished my standard Monarch 5CC 100k attempt. 2042AD finish with all five cities at 20K. A better date is possible as I sold a lot of cultural buildings to slow down two cities. I've submitted it to the HOF but it won't chart as I have two better 20K entries. Better planning with some SGL luck and I think that Emperor is possible. I'll give it a go at some point.[/"off topic"]

Thanks for that - now in the final republic stages to cash rush the last few bits (can't afford the maintainance in feudalism anymore) but on target for 950 AD - I haven't pushed the limits here - I am still growing and could probably build 40 or so more cities before hitting the domination limit, the late SGL cost me, as did the lack of planning for a decent pyramids build. I recon that there could be 10 turns to be shaved off this on a reasonable run, even more with 2 early SGL's, but I probably won't have time to do another serious run before the deadline.
