G-III Theta

I have to say, Tone, I am amazed. I am definitely doing something wrong, because I cant' get out of the AA before about 750 BC with the russians, and if you dont' get a good start with them, what's the point?

I have to agree, AT. With EXP civs you have to try and make hay whilst the sun shines and this is invariably whilst those scouts can do something useful. What are your initial settings? I went with 13 rivals, although I have reduced this by one with the recent mapfinder run today. Maybe I was just very lucky in the game I played.

Contacts are nice though. Can you believe that neither the Germans nor the Byzantines had met any other SCI civs when I gifted them into Modern Times in my game? It sure makes trading easier!

I think part of it is that I have been running with a full slate. I had better luck when I went with just the sci civs, though finding the guys with alphabet took a little longer. What kills me is when a scout who just crossed the 10 turns of jungle/swamp runs into a barb..,

I should probably keep quiet for a bit longer but I simply can't. My next attempt could still fall apart but so far it's been the game of my dreams.

Huts have appeared all over the pace, many of them giving techs. I didn't bother with research until I could trade for Alpha and with my first research project (Writing) I get an SGL. :woohoo:

By the time Philosophy is due, I have every AA techs except for Republic and I've met seven scientific civs. I enter the MA with two turns of anarchy, I have all the first tier techs plus Invention, I have the Pyramids built in Moscow and it's still only 1600BC.

Civ heaven?

well i have started one game. in 1450 BC i am republic and in middle ages with feudalism, engineering and invention.unfortunately i didn't get any leaders

Thats some crazy wide city spacing there T. Looks like a good candidate for a great date!

This competition is hotting up! :goodjob: Let's hope that neither of us get sneak attacked too early. :) BTW I don't recognise you as a regular gauntlet competitor so let me wish you a warm welcome to the competition.

As AT says, don't worry too much about the SGL. Pyramids really helps expansion but it's not essential. Sounds like you're around 20 turns ahead of my first game and I didn't get any leaders for that until they were too late. I'd rather have a decent, food rich and high commerce core without the Pyramids than have an early SGL in a small area surrounded by desert.

I popped a settler by the gems and didn't want to walk too far. I only had one town and the unit costs of the scouts was starting to mount up so I decided to claim the gems and have 5-6 towns at around RCP4 plus some others at around 6-7, which included the two nearby luxes.

I hope that you are not resting on your laurels BTW. I'm wondering what type of game you'd play for this. Maybe continents, so that you can completely wipe out all evidence of any aggression before charming the other guys?

yes competition is hotting up, but i remember you as a good fast research game player so my chances beating your date are really weak i think.
well i am not regular gauntlet competitor but all the time i was reading hall of fame forum.sometimes even try to play gauntlet game.i don't have much time so i'm always late to submit my gauntlet games.
in the beggining pyramids are really powerful so having them is really huge boost in expansion phase, really huge boost i think

it is, yes,but it's mainly a big boost to growing cities/towns to size 12,and that is hard on a map like this because luxuries are so scattered - you need 5 or 6 and that takes a while to get!

well you can use entertainment slider all the time, 10% is usually enough to keep your citizens with four luxuries.usually i set up second core city building workers in two turns in republic. it's much faster growing your population in low food cities, it's really effective

Its hard to kill everyone quickly as the Russkies ;). Maybe I will find a start with Ivory nearby. A thought would be playing the Aztecs and playing superaggressive to get around 50 cities at 1000 bc, and do 4 turn research the rest of the way. It hurts to lose out on free techs though. Might try that...

610AD. Not as good as I had hoped given the fantastic start I was dealt.

Early MA research was tough and yet again the AI provided no research apart from freebies and optionals. Getting Ironclads as my free tech didn't help matters but not using the Pyramids to expand quickly enough was equally costly. On reflection, this game should have been closer to 500AD but you live and learn.

Will I get another opportunity like this? Highly unlikely for this gauntlet, so I'm going to try a civ with an early UU to be more aggressive and try and to get an early MA GA.

After getting bored with my game as the French (archipelago got rather tedious), I started a continents game, as Byzantines. I wanted to see the best date I could get from wonders gold (:crazyeye:) so I was basically playing it as a 20k Culture game. Ended up with a win in 1440 AD, when I realised it was on Cheiftian.... Live and learn.

My hard drive packed in, and it has taken me about 10 days to get my machine up and running again.

I can see that some good dates have been achieved. After 10 days without playing civ I plan to go all out for a few days and at least get one game submitted.

PS Tone, very nice result yesterday, well done! :goodjob: (Spurs 2 - 1 Chelsea)

You forgot to mention the icing on the cake, West Ham 1 - Arsenal 0 :D

Same problem here. Although it's civ4 in the way. I'm planning to still play the gauntlents, and finish off my deity milk game, but my civ time is going to spent on learning civ4 for the rest of this year.

My game isn't finished yet either. (It's only going to be a late 900's finish but I'll sumbit it when it's done--a couple of days I guess).
