G-III Xi

With apologies for chopping the quote;

...but I already had almost 300 hours in the game...

this part of the post best sums up why a Pagaea game is better suited for a Gauntlet. I'm sure a lot of those 300 hours were spent with the computer idling, and maybe you played it inside a month, but speaking for myself I'm still not sure if I can finish my game in time.

You must have your submisions in by 05/31/07. Good luck and have at it!

The gauntlet is due by the 31st of May, however, with the holiday this weekend, (in USA) some of you ;) would like to enjoy it instead of staying home playing civ, so we'll probably be extending this until the next tentatively scheduled update, which might be on or around June 15th. So don't abandon those half done entries, you'll still get a chance to put them in. Good luck.

Let's make it June 14th. I know that means skipping an update this month, but it'll get us back on track and provide more time for this Gauntlet.

I've scraped to the halfway stage in my game (I'm not quite over my civ-fatigue but I'm optimistic I'll be able to finish before 14th June). I had a glance at the ScoreCalc and it stands at 7.7k -- I haven't built that many Hospitals yet but I'm still not expecting to exceed 8k.

I don't think ScoreCalc gives a correct figure until you reach max. pop. If you've still to build hospitals I would expect this figure to go up. I think you might reach 8K. Sorry to hear about your civ-fatigue.

I was curious about how much higher the dom. limit is on archipelago as Eman points out. I was surprised to see just how much difference it makes. Out of 1,000 rolls of mapfinder for 60%pangaea the highest dom. limit I found was the one I played and submitted-1726. With only 50 rolls of mapfinder on 60%archipelago the lowest dom limit was 1816 and the highest was 1936. This is a very large difference. If we use these dl's as an example, that means at least (210*2 + 210)/540 = 1.17*2(for warlord difficulty) = 2.34 pts more per turn during the time you run out the clock over the pangaea map. And this is not even taking into account the extra free sea tiles you should get on archipelago. I think despite the difficulty of reaching max. pop. on archipelago, I would still want these extra points over so many turns.

Good luck on finishing and keep us up to date.:)

@Eman- a very nice game.:goodjob: It is rather difficult to find 300+ hours for a gauntlet, though.

Maybe I am "misunderestimating" the score increase, but I'll only be adding specialists once the hospitals are rushed.
Most of my Milking experience comes from Huge maps; my best efforts are:

Chieftain -- 9450 (Sumeria, archipelago)
Warlord -- 17832 (Maya, pangaea)

So I'm a firm believer in the power of Archipelago but it is much more of an effort. And even on Chieftian it can be nerve-wracking to have vast offshore tracts of undefended, pre-railroad cities surrounding the AI's holdings.

By the way, here is the result of an experiment I did some time ago looking at the domination limits of non-huge maps.

Yeah, I was misunderestimating. I was able to add more than 150 happy citizens between 1400 and 1500 AD. I still have some sea tiles I can claim.

Very nice, Bartleby. Thanks for the wonderful link, I'll certainly be referring to that often. I'm interested to see what happens.

How's your game going, AT?

I "accidentally dominated" a couple of times.
The first one [1610 AD] I'll put down to bad counting; the second time [1952] I could have predicted if I hadn't had the wrong idea of the shape of a 1000 culture border; the last one [1973] I never saw coming.

ahh...

bummer.

I've stopped riding the domination limit, cause it's a lot of risk for not a lot of reward. every tile is essentially 3 points * difficulty. Why risk messing up a lot of work?

Well, this has convinced me, anyway. It was one of those silly things like having exactly 20k or 160k; I always want to be one tile away from Domination. I think the lesson has sunk in.

Most of the games in the HOF were submitted when accidental DL excess was permitted.

There are at least 3 reasons the DL limit can be hard to stay below:
1. It's difficult to figure when you have multiple culture expansions on 1 turn. The utility programs (i.e. MapStat) are just not that sophisticated to figure it all out.
2. A bordering AI, which can be very useful if they are occupying tundra while you get sea tiles, may contract their border against you.
3. Their is a bug in the program that can cause an incorrect border expansion.

I think you should ask superslug/Marsden for an exemption.....they're pretty reasonable people. :)

P.s. I also think riding the DL Limit (Viz. 1 tile from DL Victory) should be encouraged.......The whole idea is to maximize the score. ;)

The only way I know is to go to your cultural advisor, sort by culture, and monitor the cities close to 10, 100, and 1K culture as best you can. This is after selling as much culture as you can.

With all due respect, gentlemen, how can HOF veterans have possibly forgotten about CRpSuite? The domination warnings in there are pretty darn good...good enough that I long ago reversed the permissions on accidental dominations.

I'm not asking for an exception, but I will mention that two of the three Dominations in my G-III Xi attempt would not have been "warned" by MapStat. You still have to closely monitor Cultural (as opposed to border) expansions and I have found to my cost that a 1000 culture expansion* can pick up coast tiles a long way away across water. I'll post some screenshots tomorrow. (edit: here they are)

* Normally I'd just sell the culture buildings to stop the expansion, but I wasn't able to in this case because I wanted Happiness so I could work my sea tiles.

I'm at 1410 - looking like a 7900 score. I'm just hitting the space bar now, cleaning some pollution on the way.

I think I'll end up with over 500K in gold :)
