G&K hosting GOTY??

I have this probably drop-dead simple question but I can't find the answer to it. And yes, I know I can "just do it" to try, but I'm @work, son is visiting this weekend (in a few hours), I'd need him in order to test it, and I'd much prefer knowing ahead of time if it can't work (vs. us both being frustrated an failing and him maybe hating the game).

I had Civ5 and just added G&K over Tgiving week.
At the same time, son bought Civ5 GOTY with his own Steam account, but not G&K (I don't know why not).

If we want to try MP for the first time, can I host a game w/ my G&K and he can link up to it via his GOTY? Might the G&K features still work for him, or would I need to disable that before starting the game to make it work?

Just wondering if anyone knows or has tried this.

Let me also add, where is the best place to find a step-by-step tutorial walk through to setup Civ5 MP? I can find a lot of strategy guides once the game is going but the only "how to start" page I found is ... well ... paltry in this area. Everything also assumes 'Net use vs. home LAN. I'm thinking like: an explanation of "teams", can you play AIs mixed with real ppl if it's just 2 of you? So then does diplomacy still work beyond the chat window (to account for AIs?) ... Can I get rid of the chat window via some setting? etc.

Thanks for any direction.

Check the sticky guide for mp from KM.

Easy step to get online with your son : From steam, create a game from the internet section. Send an invite to your son. Play.

If GOTY has GnK in it there is no problem.

No, the GOTY doesn't have G&K.
The thing is easy: You can play a game together if you both have the same DLC in the game (G&K counts as DLC).
Means if you deactive G&K via the menu in the main game, you should be able to host a new MP game, and your son should be able to join.

There is a DLC submenu in the main menu. There you can disable any DLC (including G&K) to match your son. You can do it when creating the game instead though, and that way it is localized to that game (so you don't have to re-enable it for singleplayer when you quit). When choosing game settings like map type and size, the checkboxes at the bottom include which DLCs you want to allow.

As for what settings you can play with, you can do any mixing and matching of AIs you want. You cannot have more total players than the map recommends. If you try to do teams, you will only be able to have 2 "teams", though you can leave some players on their default "team 3" and whatnot to get 2 legit teams and a bunch of FFA players.

I don't play with teams, but I explored it once and I think I remember some of the mechanics. The cost of every tech is multiplied by the number of players on your team, and when the team researches a tech everyone gets it. If an ally is building a world wonder you are not allowed to, but I believe you all get the benefits of any passive effects. For example, the Great Library should only give 1 free tech, 1 free library, 1 set of +3 science, and 1 Great Scientist point per turn. These are city-based. But the Great Wall should give its "each tile costs 1 extra point to move through" bonus to your whole team. The Great Engineer point and culture are again localized. I think this is correct, but I am not sure.

The AI will never contact you for a deal in multiplayer, you must always go to them. There is no denouncing, only Declarations of Friendship, though without G&K on you may not even have that.

Hope this helps!
