I normally don't chime in on these types of discussions, but I am starting to see an alarming trend with regards to modding, or lack of, ability in the Civ series.
It seems many take for granted what we have when we look back at previous incarnations of Civ. I for one understand the feeling when planned scenarios/mods in Civ 3 and 4...only to hit a brick wall due to some hard coded limitation, restrictive game mechanic and so on.
Whilst Civ 5 is not perfect (and likely 6, 7 and 8 will also fail the 'perfection' test!), we must always compare the pros/cons.
Yes, units are complicated and difficult to mod, but this will be overcome with time as the modding community goes through the learning cycle. The best Civ 3 and 4 units have been coming out in the last few years even thought the games are much older.
Editors....I can't seem to understand the arguments here....when we don't get one we scream in anger, when we get one....we scream in anger how bad it is and then even prefer to go back to basics again. The editor we have is better than 'good' given it allows us to do much more than the previous ones. This combined with the SDK tools is (IMO) a smart move towards full and proper 'moddability'.
On how difficult it is to mod things..... that's the price we pay when developers provide a very moddable environment to begin with. Yes, it can easily discourage some, but once you go through the learning cycle (as mentioned above), things get easier and you even start to dream up more complex things that you thought the engine may not have initially been able to do.
To give an example on the date editing comment above, the abilituy to modify the date via SQL/LUA has enabled modders to come up with any wierd and wacky system they can dream of as opposed to the hard coded logic provided in Civ 4. As I write this, I have managed to implement a custom date system that also displays seasons next to the date in order to do certain events....that IMO is a good example of the power Civ 5 provides versus previous versions.
In the end, I would also like to see more modding features and fixes to some of the existing graphic limitations, but lets be grateful for what we have and the fact that Firaxis is giving us this XP.
Call me a glass half full guy, but I am happy with Firaxis efforts even if some of their initial attempts have been off the mark (i.e. those darn graphics limitations).
