G&K update or standalone

Hi, my question may be a bit stupid: is it necessary to have Civ V, or is Gond&Kings a "standalone" version?

Since it is an expansion pack, I presume you will need base game for it.

Yes. It is likely that they will do some sort of combined pack, but they are unlikely to make it available without the initial game.

Having said that, the original game is quite often very inexpensive now, since it has been a while since the release.
