G-Major VIII

something under 300 should be doable. i expect deity might make lower times possible due to exploiting AI's near infinite gold supply, though variance is increased.

deity is ridiculously reroll intensive =/
i got one beautifully isolated start, a peninsula past a twoish tile choke point about 20 hexes from nearest civ. it had a huge section of land just for me and absolutely zero decent places to settle a second or third city. the only multiluxury spot consisted of desert incense, and neither of the twoish single luxury spots were near rivers.

Totally. Skill alone doesn't win, patience does. And epic makes it worse. I'm still traumatized. :crazyeye:

Got incredibly lucky i guess, 8-10 rerolls needed only, really started one until turn 50 and tried another one later for the big game.

I rerolled a lot more for G-Minor XV. Maybe 60-70 rerolls.

Forget about what I said before. Now I'm traumatized. :nuke:
I rerolled twice and knew there wouldn't be another one. Definitely not my format.

Well, I gave it a try. I lost to a UN vote when I was about 10 turns from victory. Not bad for my first Deity level game on CiV since I got it for my birthday earlier this month. Perhaps I'll give it another shot later, but there isn't much time left this month.

I used the first map that was generated without rerolling.

I had room in my corner of the map for five good cities. I had six silver (three in one of the cities) and not much else in the way of luxuries. I was able to trade silver for most of the game since there was only one silver on the map not owned by me.

My corner of the map was boxed in by India with a nice screen of mountains in between us, so I had a nice peaceful time to develop my cities. I had mostly plains and hills (not many grasslands) so early population growth was a bit slow. I also lacked fishing resources (one each in two cities).

I was able to get a few wonders. I used the Liberty finisher to get a GE to rush the Hagia Sophia (for another free GE with I used to rush Notre Dame). I also slow built the Oracle, the Sistine Chapel (unbelievable but true on Deity), and late in the game the Sydney Opera House. I may have gotten another wonder which I am forgetting about. I missed out on Stonehenge, the Colossus, and the Hanging Gardens (which would have been a huge benefit given my lack of food early on).

The AI dogpiled on other AI civs early in the game eliminating two of them and crippling two others. This limited RA abuse (and cost me two RA which were incomplete). The dominant civ on the map was Germany. Luckily, Bismark was on the opposite side of the map from me so his warmongering was limited to other AI civs. Bismark was dropping nukes on my Indian neighbor in the 1400s which made me a bit nervous. Eventually, I was the only Civ which still held my capital (besides Bismark of course), but Gandhi and Askia both had several cities and a strong army to hold off Bismark.

I couldn't have timed the end of research any better. I popped a GS, finished Sydney Opera House (used to receive two free techs), and finished Oxford University all withing three turns to bulb the final four techs (ending with nanotechnology). I also finished the Apollo Program in my capital city a turn or two before so that all five cities could begin building spaceship parts.

In the end, I was careless and not paying enough attention to the UN voting. I had 1,600 gold and could have bought off one of the CS to prevent Germany from winning the vote (Bismark had exactly the 10 votes required). On the previous vote, he only had 6 out of 10 votes required to win, and I did not give the potential for him to spoil my game with a UN vote enough thought.

After losing my first attempt, I read about the trick to abuse Legalism to receive four free Wat (Universities). This would been a tremendous advantage and shaved quite a few turns off my game. I think I could have finished before Bismark had built the blasted UN if I had gone this route.

i'm not going to get a submission in for this. my first attempt took way too long due to constant wars, and got pretty screwed by a runaway rome taking out 3 civs on the other side of the world, while i was busy in wars with the other 3. i quit around turn 300 due to lack of RAs necessary to clear the last techs

my second attempt was looking really promising, i had four cities up, lots of luxuries, and was on track for legalism around turn 150 when i was dowed by both darius and askia on turn 120ish. darius sent 5 pikes, 1 swordsman and 4 archers and managed to take my second city.

possibly counterintuitively, i think i could have survived if i had signed 2 RAs for education. i was hard beelining it, whereas if you sign the RAs you have to complete various other low level techs to get a decent median; i expect my city would have had another 1 or 2 defense if i had cleared those techs.

vexing, you are the Vettel of HoF, not submitting one gauntlet won't hold you for winning this championship ;)
You are truly the master. But even you can't be perfect :)
Keep it up! You are someone to look up to (Civ wise ;))

I tried a few more times and had similar stories ending in DOW almost every time. It is too bad that my perfect start was on my first attempt where I lacked the knowledge to be effective (no free Wats from Tradition and rushed ND instead of PT with GE because I didn't understand the effect of RA). I just got the game for my birthday this month and was learning the ins-and-outs of CiV relying on my outdated BTS mentality.

I'll probably work on my Steam Achievements for awhile before I stat submitting HOF games. I just thought this Gauntlet sounded like a good way for me to spin up the Deity difficulty on my new toy and have it recorded in the HOF. Eventually I will figure out how to exploit CiV just like I did when Unclethrill and I unlocked the cheesy wins for Deity level EQM in BTS. Then I will return to HOF with a vengeance!

Start submitting, it's fun to have more players in the HoF :p and then we can beat someone ;)

For the first time, I'll not be submitting for the gauntlet. Deity is too hard to just finish a game quickly :) I started a game yesterday and found it had quite a good start. But Alex overran me with a swarm of Phalnax and Catapults. Can we have a non-epic games for a while? I don't have that much time to spend.

Unfortunately, I do not have as much time as I used to. A couple years ago, I worked a job where I had to babysit equipment on the night shift and was allowed to bring my personal laptop in at night to kill time. That made it easy to play HOF games for BTS for 30+ hours each week. I have a much better job now, but I cannot play CiV while on the clock any more. The tradeoffs we make in life...

I also had to pass on this one. We're relocating next month and things are a little crazy right now. My guess is that Deity, Standard would get much better participation than Deity, Epic. Participation will always be low in a reroll-intensive format with a game speed longer than standard.

I'll be interested to see what people come up with.

For a HoF game is doesn't matter if you have much time or not. When you finish a game, submit it and you are in the Hof. Mostly I pick out games I might be able to get a medal.

The HoF page seems bugged. I don't see any gold medal(1st place is a silver medal ) or game added since at least 2 weeks. What happens?

It depends how many players submitted a game:

At least 2 people to have: Bronze
Then when there are 4 you have: Silver - Bronze
And then when you have 6 or more you have: Gold - Silver - Bronze
