G-Minor 51

Finished 1230AD and yes theres loads of ways to improve. Nice work Killercane.

How far you research?

-D

Ow damn... still played with 3.13... also did the major 33 with it.... Thats..... a load of wasted time... cultural marathon... lmao...

1732 AD for me. I got a bit sidetracked when Stalin kept attacking me.
Ouch - you have Stalin as opponent? You should select your opponents, otherwise it's a gamble to achieve an early win.
Always choose non-aggressive, non-protective opponents and if you are rushing for the huts you should not choose civs starting with "Hunting".

I hadn't tried HOF play before, but since this Gauntlet was at approachable Warlord level, I figured this would be a good place to start.

It may be a bit cheeky of me, but I've also chosen this as my first game ever of BTS. (Had only vanilla before...and hadn't even played that for over a year until last week.)

I'm at 1 AD after my first, long session of play. Holy buckets this game is slow.

I chose a Hemispheres map (2 continents). I let the game pick my six opponents. (It's more fun for me to deal with whatever the game chooses to throw at me, than to try to figure out what would be the optimal settings for the earliest possible victory. I'm not necessarily good at that anyway.) Three were on the same continent as me: Brennus, Gandhi, and Stalin.

Stalin was close enough to come greet me within 10 turns. This made me a skosh nervous, and I figured it was worth taking a chance to knock off Stalin early. Very early. My first build was a second Warrior; I moved my two Warriors through woods and jungle on their way to the Russians, and they got three promotions between them fighting animals. I invaded Stalin's territory with my two mighty units; he still had a lone Warrior defending; I beat the odds with my first Warrior, knocking his strength down below 0.5 and making it easy peasy for the second Warrior to destroy the city and knock Uncle Joe out of the game. Whew.

There was a natural choke point about halfway between me and the Celts; I made sure to chop-rush a Settler and grab that post-haste. As for Gandhi, he's slightly farther away, and there's lots of jungle between us, so my third city was placed in the opposite direction, securing stone and horses and lots of riverfront property. I keep feeling that I should have way more cities, but this is Marathon so it's not as late as it seems, and the maintenance costs are already a concern. Still a fair bit of vacant space nearby though, both where Stalin used to be and between me and India. That's making it real fun with the barbarians...especially since Brennus beat me to the Great Wall (before I had stone, and while I was still focused on rushing the Oracle).

The barbs did do me a favor by taking one city off of Gandhi, which I then grabbed from them recently courtesy of a couple of Axemen with city-attack upgrades. I destroyed another barbarian city, over to the East where Stalin was...kinda regretting not taking it over now though. (There was a two-tile overlap with one of my existing cities, a few resources but also lots of jungle and some mountains, and I'm already concerned about being too big too soon...a tough call.)

With two gold mines in my starting location--I didn't regenerate maps at all, just went with what they gave me--I've been able to pump a lot of money into research. I'm far enough ahead that I haven't got round to Alphabet and tech-trading yet. Gandhi and Brennus founded the first three religions, but I got the next three...I used my first GP, a Great Prophet, to lightbulb the last of those. (Building a shrine with him didn't seem as immediately valuable yet, as none of my religions were in more than two cities at the time. It's so hard to find time to pump out missionaries in this one.) All three religions were founded in my second city, which is right up against the Celtic borders. That suits me pretty well.

So I'm thinking if I can get the seventh religion, and either take over my neighbors or at least beat them to the other continent by enough turns, I can convert the three mystery civilizations over there to my faith, and keep them with that faith, with ease. Beelining Optics and Divine Right would seem to be in my future.

I just finished a beeline to Machinery, and so I'm considering going to a war footing and cranking out some Cho-Ko-Nu and Swordsmen. How many of each will I need to knock off my neighbors, though; how far will that set me back in my cultural/religious building and technological development; and can I afford to absorb both capitals into my empire yet? I suppose I'd know more answers to these questions if I built a Scout or two (old scouting units are long since dead), and/or figured out the proper use of the new espionage system.

An interesting and fun game so far...except for the parts where everything's taking so bloody long and I feel like I'm never going to see the end of those 92 turns it says it'll take to build a Library in my newest city (stupid Marathon scale...couldn't y'all have settled for Epic?).

Welcome to the HOF.:)

You are correct that random opponents is more fun and interesting. However, it is more difficult.

In my first game I accidentally left one of the slots random and got Genghis. I thought "what the hell", and I plodded through to 1400 AD with Genghis under control since we shared a religion. Then he captured a holy city, switched religions (to one I didn´t have), and promptly embarked on a holy crusade - starting with yours truly. That was 8 hours of game play down the drain.

For my second attempt, I made sure all my opponents were selected (Asoka, Gandhi, Cyrus, Hatty, Mansa, Freddy if you are interested) and had a nice easy ride to a so-so 1530 AD win.

I think that the HOF is more interesting if you make an attempt to test yourself against everyone else (and I say this as someone who has never come close to winning) because this forces you to think about your game and try new tricks and strategies. It also gives you an excuse to discuss strategy with everyone else. "Unfortunately", choosing your opponents is one of the factors that you do have to take into account.

Aww crap. I got into the 13th century but then suffered my second crash of the game. From what I understand of the HOF rules, that means the game cannot be accepted. After what's certainly well over 10 hours of effort.

I wasn't anticipating any kind of ranking of course--I'm nowhere near that good--but it would've been nice to check off my first valid-submission box.

When I was last an active player (pre-Warlords), getting through a Marathon game with fewer than a dozen crashes would've been out of the question. Any tips on how y'all do it these days would be appreciated.

Managed a 1280 finish on an high water inland sea with Bismarck Frederick Pericles Surv Darius and Zara for company. Had 8 GA contirbute to the cause. Golden Age x 3 one via the Taj. They kept trying to elect me religious leader  but I just had to say no. Founded 5 religions and built the cath equivs for all except i didnt complete a full set of mosques. Worked out nicely in the end with all cities going legendary within 3 or turns of each other. Didnt really take all that long for a marathon game but you get a workout pushing the red button :D

Congratulations, sounds like the game I submitted. With 5 religions and full cathedrals culture comes in very fast at the end

I think I made the cut off and submitted a 1090 AD game. I hope I attached the correct files since my first try last month was badly fumbled.

I did not settle untill the settler went around and look for huts and settled near Washington's capital. Settled two more within few turns and built 5 warriors to take the american city. After that expanded to 8 cities (eventually 9) built all kind of Wonders and had 4 GA and 5 GA to help the slow city #2 to catch up. Founded all but Buddhism and built all major religous buildings in each culture city. Never got Buddhism, Last 3 dozen turns stopped building culture buildings and built culture in each of 3 cities.

Alot of luck was in this game like popping gold, silver, and copper in the fat cross of these 3 cities. Some of the other cities were poorly placed to get Stone and Marble. Very interesting game.

1090 AD? Thats..... amazing....
Congratualtion, if your not making 1st place i am gonna smash this game :D. I should work on my GP farm. When did you stopped researching?

You just said it - you have to smash your game now  I'am still no. 1 :mischief:

(and I still lost some turns due to not checking all cities each turn ...)

Thank you but HolyHandGrenade had one better. Great job HolyHandGrenade and out of this world game killercane. I am amazed by that score for a culture game. I have yet to break 100k in any type of game.

I am delighted that I did not screw up the submittal and that I turned research fairly early. Typically I turn off research some time after 1300 AD. But looking at top players games, it seem essential to go for 100% culture as soon as possible.

In this game, I turned off research 6 turns after Liberalism in 260 AD. I should have turned off after Liberalism but for some reason wanted to complete MC (never built a single forge). Never mind, I just rememberd why. I was in a GA from the Taj Mahal and was playing with Civics and switched just before learning Lib :crazyeye:and was not able to switch to Free Speach(?)

Just for the sake of disclosure:

My game plan/Execution
  1. 3 cottage cities early/ Yes by turn 60 w/luck :)
  2. 6 support cites early/ No, forgot city 8 and 9 untill too late
  3. Run 3 GP farms/ No, only two
  4. Easy on the whip/ Yes, but may be not the best plan. :scan:
  5. Go after Wonder based culture in the begining: to 500 BC/ No, went past :(
  6. To build major religious building in the mid game: to 1AD/ No, barely started :crazyeye:
  7. All culture till the end/ Finally back on track ;)

Learned
  1. Setup cities as soon as possible,
  2. Can not build temples fast without the whip and
  3. Start building Major religious buildings before 1AD

Good Luck
Had a lot: poped 2 settlers, 2 workers, 2 scouts, 1-2 warriors, few maps and over 500gold.
2 Gems and copper showed up.

Bad luck
About 6-8 turns of slave revolts in culture cities,
Mob destroyed A Major Religious building and another non culture building in the last Culture city.

It was a very luck driven game. I could have done better with more micro management. But I am happy.

Thank you to Methos for the game.

Congrats all :)

Thx :) If you are interested I think I have stored the autolog for this game and I can make a short excerpt from it.

Thank you to Methos for the game.
Yes, it was amazing

Thanks. :goodjob: If I say no, I will be lying. Yes please. Especially on civics.

Ok - here is the 1st part of the (cleaned up) autolog up to turn 250.

After some tries with waiting for religion spread I decided to aggressively research those religions by myself. Military I want to get 2-3 other capitols as fast as possible to start developing legendary cities and GP-Farm. Therefore research was Mysticism-Meditation-Polytheism and build-queue was Warrior-Warrior-Worker. I think I canceled the worker because I got 2-3 of those guys from goody huts.

1st civic change was at turn 120 to slavery (pop rushing) and OR (missionaries)

With the warriors I got Elizabeth (turn 10), Augustus (turn 12) and Suleiman (turn 68 with 3 warriors). Because I was too greedy I attacked De Gaulle for his worker and lost York to his warrior-scout . So I lost several turns here for building military to recapture/eliminate DeGaulle. After that I stopped all military acivities and focused on religion spread and getting 9 cities.

If you wonder why I built a galley and a scout at turn 227, this is for hut popping at the nearby islands. I mainly got gold (what I am hunting for) to keep research high.
