Game continually crashes to desktop after installing XP Pro

I installed this game while having Windows XP Home on my laptop: Dell Inspiron, P4 2.2 GHz, 512 MB Ram, Intel 82845 graphics card. I know the graphics card isn't up to snuff, and I was getting the black terrain and all that jazz, but I just played by revealing the map and everything else ran perfectly fine.

I had to upgrade to XP Pro for work-related reasons, and now the game almost always crashes to the desktop after the final intro movie, just before the main menu. Once in a blue moon the game doesn't crash, goes to the main menu, and everything works okay, but this is a rare occasion. I've downloaded all recent Windows updates, reinstalled Civ 4, and I still get the same problem.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Have you upgraded to XP Pro, or have you reinstalled XP Pro from scratch?
Sometimes upgrading instead of reinstalling causes strange behaviour...

Also check if you have the latest drivers for your graphics, sound and motherboard. If you need to update the drivers, do so before installing Civ4.

Another question... I know it's silly, but I have to ask anyway : Do you watch the whole intro movie or do you just skip it? Pressing Esc to skip it is a very good idea :-D

Other than that.... I don't know. I'm pretty sure you have XP Pro Service Pack 2 don't you? I thought so ;-)

There are at least 50 things that can be wrong with your setup and causing this problem, but I would rank upgrading the OS instead of re-installing in the top 10 list.

Good luck :)
