Game Crashes after a dozen turns

2 months ago everything was working fine, but then I downloaded the latest patch and the game fell apart on me. Now I can start a game, but around turns 10 - 20 the game either starts to hang indefinitely or crashes my system entirely. I'd really like to get it working again, but am not sure how. I updated my video card and that hasn't seemed to help. I'm using a 64 bit system FWIW and play with the Direct 9 because I'm on XP. Any help would be appreciated, I love that they keep improving the game, but wish they'd give us the option to accept or reject uploads. It would be a shame if after a couple of years, I couldn't play this game again, especially when people are still playing versions of the game from 15 years ago.

Bump, still having problems. No suggestions at all? Would really like to get this game working again. Does anyone know if there's a way to unload the update and just play the game the way it was before they broke it?

Don't know if there's a way to back out the latest patch, but there is something else you could do that would help the game developers in tracking down & fixing your game crash problems.

Please look to see if you have any recent .mdmp files in your Civ-5 folder (look inside the C: Drive Program Files folder, not the My Documents folder).

If you do have some recent .mdmp files, then zip or rar them, and make another post here with those zip/rar files attached.

I went to C:\Program Files(x86)\Firaxis Games and all I see is the folders for Civ4 and for Alpha Centauri. When I search for Civ5, I can find the shortcut in my Steam folder, but am not sure where the actual files are located on my hard drive. Do you know where else they might be found. A search on my hard drive for all .mdpd files reveals no results. Is it possible to have the game and not have any .mdpd files?

I found the folder. Looked through all of it, but still didn't find any .mdpd files. Is it possible that it's a different extension since I'm using a 64 bit machine? There were a few files with dates on them, but the most recent was from 2009 and I've definitely played Civ since then. Does anyone know if Firaxis has a technical support line that I can call for troubleshooting?

freeberg,

It is possible that Civ-5 did not generate a .mdmp crash file for you, as it does not do so every time.

Please take another look, though. If you're having trouble locating the correct folder to look in, you can simply go to the C: drive root directory, and then run a search from there. It will take longer, but will eventually find any .mdmp files anywhere on your hard drive.

P.S. Are you also playing with any mods? If so, you might want to make a copy of your lua.log file right after each crash, as it may contain info on what mod might be spiking your game.

A search of the root directory says no .mdpd files, so I'm guessing that it's not there. I hate to keep crashing the game on purpose, but if I do so will it eventually generate one or does the fact that it's not there mean it's unlikely to generate one? No mods on my end, but plenty of .lua files. When Civ5 came out, I bought this machine specifically for this game, it's kind of troubling to have them change the requirements after the fact with an update. I'm running dual core processors, have plenty of ram (4 gigs) and lots of hard drive space. My video card is the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT which is on the minimum side of things, but still supported by the game.
