Game crashes when I click on a specialist

Hello.

Before I start complaining about a bug, I want to say that my computer is perfectly healthy in all respects: no O/C, no virus, no worm whatsoever... It never crashes in any circumstance but when playing Civ3. So please don't summarily dismiss my complaint by telling me to format my HDD and reinstall!

I have a 2500+ Barton CPU, 512 Mo of RAM and Win98se. I'm playing Conquests with the latest 1.22 patch.

The bug: Civ3 runs fine on my computer, but not beyond the second era.
Shortly after entering the third era, I often start having problems: the game crashes on various occasions. Sometimes, it happens when I try to wake a unit; but in my current game, it crashes each time I click on a specialist. I don't know why, but note that it always involves clicking on stg.

Anyone has experienced that? It's so annoying that I almost never play beyond the first half of that era. Please help me!

Do you use some graphic mod for specialist faces shown in the city screen? IIRC there was problem with 'smiley badges' mod for original Civ3 and PTW causing crashes as no policeman nor engineer face was present. Newer version of the mod for Conquests was uploaded couple of months ago, though.

This happened to me recently.

Are you using a graphics mod?

I realised that I was using a smiley mod in C3C that was designed for vanilla civ, which didn't have the code for the civ engineers or policemen. Therefore, upon trying to access the police image, the game crashes. I'm not sure if anyone has created a smiley mod for C3C yet, so I hope you kepta copy of the original file.

Yes, I use these smiling faces, and yes no engineer or policeman appears. Maybe that explains at least part of my bugs!
I'll start looking for the updated mod. Thank you!

either look for the updated mod, or, I know you don't want to hear this, but uninstall, delete everything and reinstall.

Is this all from a single game ? You could have a corrupt save-file...

I found an updated mod! But it only provides the smaller version (8x8) while I am used to the larger one (15x15) which I find easier to read. If anyone knows of a C3C friendly mod with large badges, I'd really love to hear from it.
At least, I now see policemen and the game no longer crashes when I click on specialists. So, thanks again Gen and Chunkymonkey!

Now, for the other causes of crashing, well... I'll restart this discussion when I see them.
