Game crashes when trying to save (even autosave)

I have had a number of scenarios that have run into the same problem now. They are very simple scenarios (basically all I changed is that wonders of the world don't expire), but each of these games suddenly started crashing about part way through the industrial era.

It happens all of a sudden, usually at the beginning of a new turn when the game tries to autosave, it will suddenly crash to the desktop. When I try to reload my last save, it does the same thing (even if the last save is a turn or two before when the game crashed - it now crashes even earlier than it did the first time). It crashes every time you try to save the game (or eveytime the game tries to autosave). I've tried loading the autosaves from previous turns and they all crash the next time it tries to save. I have tried these save games on multiple computers, and on computers that have a Civ III conquests installed from a different CD, they all do the same thing.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have a link here to the most recent save game this has happened on (It has happened on maybe six or seven others, some of which had nothing customized but the map).

Edit - Here is a link to another site where the save file is hosted in case I didn't upload it correctly to the forums.

Something else: Does it happen whenever a wonder gets build? In other words, are you missing the correct wonder splashes?
Then, did you fiddle with the specialists? Mid industrial somewhat suggest it could be related to them.
Note any mistakes here will result in a CTD, not a 'controlled exit' with error message.
Maybe check your scen for that issue, Civil Engineers and Policeman.

did you change the name of any units? I remember a year and 1/2 ago, whenever I built the unit w/ the new name, my game crashed

I'm having the same problem since updating my computer from WinME to XP Pro.

Nothing seems to be consistant about the crash, and it is a HARD CRASH requiring a power-off, power-on reset. The most obvious thing is that the sound goes crazy, often locking in a loop. I'm going to try a different sound card (currently a Live!Value) to see if the Creative drivers (now several years old since they have updated) are the problem with XP. I just purchased a ChainTec soundcard, which hopefully has completely different drivers.
The problem is so bad that I often can't even get past a single turn, and has really become a pain in the a** to play the game. It seems to get worse as the game proceeds.

I never had these problems with Win98 with all the same hardware, so I'm thinking this is an OS/driver issue.
