What exactly constitutes an "era" in game terms?
In particular there is a section in a guide about the appearance of barbarians.Knights appear in middle eras, dragoons in the later eras etc
So what exactly defines an era?
The number of total advances by all civs? Or a civ?
Certain hard coded advances?
Number of turns?

I am making a tech tree at the momment and barbarian strengh is something i plan to take into account.

P.S I remember that wonders are hard coded to belong to an era-So the Collosus f.e even if changed to have stealth as a prerequisite, it would still come up in the "Wonders of the Ancient world" info screen.

The appearance of Barbarians is altered by certain technologies. There is a brilliant paper on this at the Cradle of Civilization. I believe its William Keenan's Barbarian Paper but I don't have the link for it to hand. I have used it to good effect in Aeterna Civitas III.

Thanks.
I've read it but still it doesn't specify(or i have missed it) who must own the trigger technology.
Anybody? The owner of the city next to the rebellion/horde?

And does it have to do with the particular tech slot, or the tech prerequisite of the equivelant barb unit?
I am just trying to see if i will be able to have nomad barbs near the Asian civs and Germanic barbs in the Euro civs, saving event space in the proccess.

I think you're out of luck bud because when one civ gets the prereq the game will release the barbarian associated with that tech throughout.
