Game freezes/shits down when making a colony?

Pretty self explanatory, I played as the English and needed a colony on some other islands to bring my costs down, and once I pressed the button to make colonies, the game froze for a few seconds and then closed down.

Anyone else have this problem??

EDIT: I have had the game quite a while but never once tried making colonies until now. I have no idea if it started suddenly or if it's always been that way
