Game keeps crashing randomly, how do I make it stop?

I just installed the History Rewritten mod (and absolutely love it), but I have been getting the same random crash even before I installed the mod. This crash is relatively new, as it never happened when I first installed the game. I am a noob when it comes to modding and altering game files in general, so detailed instructions would be much appreciated. Here is the most recent error report I got:

That's a graphics related crash so it's probably either a broken/missing texture in HR or your MBP is not coping with the settings you're using. I'll need to know some additional information:

• Which civ are you playing?
• What mapsize and how many civilizations did you select?
• What era(s) are these crashes happening in?
• If you save a game before a crash does it always crash in the same place/turn after reloading?)

Which civ are you playing?

Currently Mongkut of the Thai Empire, but the crashes also happened in my previous game when I played as America (with Washington if I remember correctly). The game with America was before I had any mods installed btw.

What mapsize and how many civilizations did you select?

124x68 with 18 civs. (On the BtS Earth map for both games.) I don't remember ever having problems before on these settings.

What era(s) are these crashes happening in?

All eras, anything from the first few turns to right now (in the 200s)

If you save a game before a crash does it always crash in the same place/turn after reloading?

Nope. A few trends I noticed though are that it only crashes after I end my turn (during the AIs' turns), and that it seems more likely to crash if I spend awhile fiddling around with my advisor screens before I end my turn.

I went into the .ini file and changed the auto save frequency to every turn and saves up to 5 autosaves at a time to account for the random crashes. I also changed it so it loads the HR mod by default now.

I just reread your first post, are you saying that you were getting some such crashes before installing HR? Or it started it happening as soon as you installed it?

You're playing on a pretty big map with 18 civs so its quite possible that this is just too much for your system (HR is considerably more memory intensive than BTS). To be sure, try a slightly smaller map (Large or Huge at the biggest) with no more than 12 civs. If this reduces the occurrence or eliminates these crashes then we know that's the problem and you can experiment to find the optimum settings for you. There's also some tips for improving performance in the History Rewritten forum. If that doesn't reduce the crashes, let me know and we can try something else.

EDIT: Also try lowering your graphics settings to see if that has any effect.

I am having a very similar problem. I have been successfully playing Civ IV BTS for several months on my Macbook (2008). I just purchased a new maxed out Macbook Air and after I installed BTS on my new MBA I am getting random crashes. It seems to crash within the first few turns. I loaded a saved game that I was playing on my previous Macbook and it crashed within a couple of turns on my new MBA.

I have all of the graphics turned down as low as I can and I have tried reinstalling the program twice. One odd thing is that the trees are flickering (which didn't happen with my old Macbook). The crash always occurs at the end of a turn. I can play plain Civ IV just fine, even on medium graphics.

Any insight is appreciated!
