Game Locks Up

Let me preface this by acknowledging that I do have an ATI video card, but that I have experienced none of the described problems other ATI users have.

My problem is that the game just locks up, while I'm playing. There's no rhyme or reason to it, really; it seems to happen randomly. It once locked up when zooming in on a city to load a wonder video, but all of the subsequent lock ups have occured when nothing notable is happening. The game looks and sounds fantastic (with the exception of stuttering music in wonder videos), and I am able to play without any real errors.

The game locks up after an indeterminate amount of time, as well. It has been five minutes, and it has been twenty minutes. When it locks, I have to restart the computer manually, and am unable to CTRL-ALT-DEL, ALT-TAB, force quit or move the mouse.

My system specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
ATI Radeon 9600
Creative Audigy 2 Soundcard
1 GIG of RAM
SP2

I tried the ATI work-around, I tried disabling sound, I tried altering my graphics settings - nothing seems to stave off the crashing.

Is anyone else having this problem? I understand that there is likely no solution yet, but perhaps someone else has encountered it.

Phuquet,

I have the same problem, exactly as you have described it. I would like to add that on lockup the monitor lost signal after a few minutes and the sound looped while cutting in and out.

I also have similar system specs:

Athlon xp 3000+
Radeon 9600xt
soundblaster live! running kx drivers
1 GB RAM
SP2

Anyone else having the same problem?

I fixed this problem on my computer, for anyone who has it. Am now running the game without any problems at max settings.

I realized that my processor was running overclocked, so I scaled it back in the BIOS, and now the game works fine.

Hope this helps anyone who was in my predicament.

I noticed that Civ4 has a memory leak - so if you are playing for say 14 hours straight you will use up a half Gig of RAM and all the virtual memory. I'm going to get another Gig.

I also have an ati 9600xt. It seems like it is freezing randomly. Like i would load a game, then switch back to my other computer and check this forum :P
and after sometime without action on my part the sound goes off and when i change back, the pc is frozen, and a hard restart is necessary.

On another note i dont overclock any chips, cpu or fx card.
