Since this forum has been very active lately, i was wondering if there was any interest in reviving the SMACx Game of the Month.
If you are interested, then what kind of scenarios do you prefer? (difficulty, SMAC/SMAX, custom factions, custom rules, mods, etc)

I'm not sure about the frequency, but if I find a game of the month / season / year here, I'll probably play it at some point in time. :)

I'd be glad to play a GOTM if you decide to create one. My preferences are something not too different from the original game (SMAX preferred), but with a few changes to add interest. I could "sticky" the game and also make a forum-wide announcement to draw attention. Sooner would be better than later to take advantage of the recent activity on the forum (undoubtedly due to the release of Civ 5).

I would support a GOTM. I'd prefer classic, as the whole "aliens" thing is kidna lame, and more importantly I don't have it.

Awesome idea! :)

Yes do this.

Hi. new registered member, but long time lurker and fan of site!
-- Added: apologize for the wall of text.. got a bit carried away.

Don't mean to necro an old thread, but was interested in hearing if there was still any interest in organizing something like this? Especially with Gog.com recently offering a digital download for only $6, I might expect further interest in this classic game now for those that have had difficulty obtaining the game.

I see there is a GOTM for Civ2, 3, 4, warlords, bts, and Civ5, but nothing for SMAC? Maybe even a GOTEOM (Game Of The Every Other Month lol) would be nice to see.

Anywho.. I really enjoy following the various GOTM's over the years including downloading the occasional starting maps and trying them out on my own (yet to submit one I know... guilty). Even tho GOTM's are played in single player mode, you feel very connected to other players once all the final scores/save games are uploaded and tallied. Finding time/players to create a Multiplayer game seems very slim (at least not from what I sense), and these GOTM are the next best thing.

I don't have a lot of spare time, but would be more than willing to help with any mundane chore this might require. For sure, I would try my best to come out of the shadows and participate. Anybody else feel this way?

Do you have SMAX as well? :)

In the past there have been regular Alien Crossfire Games of the Month. The last one was about this time last year after which they stopped for reasons unknown to me. Only bdanv remains active every now and then. He said that he wouldn't mind trying out a Game of the Month for my mod (Lost Eden... look at the link in my signature) for a change, but nothing has been finalised yet.

Hope that is enough of a fill-in for ya. :D

I don't have Smax, but have checked out your mod Lost Eden while lurking these boards in the past, and it looks like a fantastic project! Gjob w/ mod. As a modder, I can relate to how much time and energy these things consume. I may have to locate a copy of SMAx just to check it out firsthand. :)

As for the non-modded version of SMAx, I have played it many years ago, but wasn't too impressed. Same goes for BTS as opposed to Warrlords. Maybe I'm just odd that way, but most expansions leave a bad taste by just trying to add content. (BroodWar being quite the exception!)

Anywho.. from the looks of things, most ppl here @ civfanatics are into the civ proper series, and not so much SMAC as I had thought after doing more browsing. There seem to be a lot of SMAC forums popping up lately including some interest @ TeamLiquid.net as seen in this exhibition game.. Just seemed like civfanatics.com would be the best place for a GOTM. I joined the other forum alphacentauri2.info that bdanv sent link to and if they are starting a GOTM there instead, I will try to participate. Tho civfanatics would seem to generate more activity?

Thank you! If you ever give it a shot be sure to let me know how you go. :)

It depends on the game I suppose! The first two Dawn of War 1 expansions were good. :) (the last wasn't so good in my opinion).

I haven't heard from bdanv recently but as far as I am aware this forum gets more activity out of the two I frequent. More casual browsing from guests goes on here...CGN has more of the advanced players but they have accounts everywhere I suppose hehe. I started here if it's any indication. :goodjob:

Teaser - part 2

The Free Drones by K.Pedersen

The Free Drones were founded very early in Planet's history, only 60 years after Planetfall. During the early years after Planetfall, the Human Hive was even more restrictive than it is currently, as Chairman Yang had much more direct control over his subjects. Nevertheless, there were rebellions.
Domai was a young man, born to drone parents. He grew up in the Hive, indoctrinated into Yang's beliefs, pursuing the Hive ideal of each person contributing to the glory of humanity as a whole. His defense of Hive ideology and his natural intelligence and strength drew attention to him. He soon became part of the Hive leadership cadre, and slowly began to rise through the ranks.
However, as Domai matured, he found himself drifting away from some of the Hive's basic concepts. In particular, he began to reject Yang's contention that humans were valueless except when they contributed to the whole. Domai asked himself "If humans are valueless except when they contribute to society, why then does society have value?" He came to the conclusion that all humans have value, but they only fulfill that value when they help others achieve their potential, through their contributions to human society. Domai also began to question the nihilism of Yang's philosophy. As he experienced more and more of life outside the education creche, he saw many things that suggested that it was not only will that gave humans purpose and meaning.
Indeed, Domai was struck by the simple power of those who resisted attempts to break them down. They gained meaning through resistance, not through imposing their will on others. In his private thoughts, Domai questioned Yang's leadership more and more.
Domai kept these reflections private, but some hint of them began to be noticed by his superiors. His rise in the hiearchy slowed, and he began to get more unpleasant tasks assigned to him. He was often involved in supressing drone dissent, activities that only added fuel to the fire of his doubt...

Is this story supposed to be consistent with http://www.firaxis.com/smac/drones.cfm or is it supposed to develop a better storyline of Domai? According to that site, it appears that he captured unity colony pod and set up his own colony of drones. I hope I didn't spoil part 2. :p
Nevertheless, I can't wait to hear the next part. ;)
