Game slow down

I have patched the game to 1.09 in the hope that it might have stopped the game from slowing down to a crawl, but it hasn't :(
I have started a game on a huge world, but from 1525 BC onwards it has begun to randomly slowdown very badly after every turn or so. I am forced to alt+tab out of the game and back which is frustrating!
I had this problem before the 1.09 patch, which is when I had decided to wait for the new patch (1.09) to appear because the game was simply too frustrating to play and enjoy.
The graphics setting are on high, 2x AA and resolution of 1280 x 1024 (this was all auto detected by the game). The spec of my computer : FX-55 @ 2.6ghz proccesor, 6800GT PCI-E, A8N SLI-Deluxe motherboard and 1gb DDR400 RAM. I have a 480 watt PSU (Tagan).
Is it recomended to upgrade to 2gb RAM, or should I wait for a new patch in the hope they will fix this problem? Before the mysterious slowdown, the game runs very smoothly and loads very fast.

You should have enought processing power and memory, but should try turning down the graphics a bit. It's an easy test to see if it helps. I prefer to turn down the AA on other settings before resolution, but resolution makes a huge difference. 1024x768 should still be good on your monitor. Test the game with some smaller maps as well, this will help us determine where the issue is.

Yeah, I have the same problem. I play almost exclusively on small and standard maps because I don't have the patience to deal with the slowness & reloading the game every 15-30 minutes.

Standard slows down a bit near the end, but it's tolerable. Large and huge just get way too bogged down, or whatever the hell is going on there. It seems to have to do w/ how much of the map you have revealed. Always gets very slow after trading maps, for example.

And after drac there linked that post on 4 or 5 threads I finally tried all that stuff, and it didnt work either of course.

Oh, I've got a P4 3.2, nvidia geforce 6800gt & 1gb memory and d865perl intel mobo. All updated to latest drivers, bios, etc.

Of the many posts that I have read (going for a long shot here) the ones that I do find strange to understand are those of people that have high end kit having problems. Assuming that the PC is optimised in each case and that there is nothing wrong with the setup I do often see that the graphics card is from the 6800 series. However there can be that many permutations that finding and looking for a common denominator can be very difficult, if one exists at all.

No doubt someone will post back now with a high end PC running a top ATI card complaining of the same issues just to show me that I'm wrong....!!!!

I have zero problems playing on a huge map.

Well, fixed my problem. Cannibalized my 2nd computer and added the two 512MB sticks to my main computer.

It now has 2GB of RAM and large & huge maps don't have the big slowdown anymore. Nothing else changed. One would think that 1GB would be plenty, but apparently that's not the case..

Your machine should be walking all over this game, i find the need to upgrade
memory further bad.

Having said that i finally bought the game, the machine i have atm to play with is above the specs posted..but it is unplayable.

As it stands i have to wait for my new machine to come back (had damaged motherboard) from the manufacturers before i can 'possibly' play a game.
