I'm a nice guy, really. I usually don't start wars. Very early in the game (usually before Chivalry, ALWAYS ALWAYS before Invention) I'll blitz a small rival nearby. They usually only have about 5-9 cities around then. I always wipe them out and take their place of I attack at all. Otherwise I don't spend hardly any effort on a military (1 or 2 defensive units per city) and wait (sometimes hope) that I'll be attacked.

I don't usually start wars. Sometimes, very early in the game (before Chivalry), I'll blitz a nearby neighbor into oblivion. Other than that, I usually spend little effort on a military until I'm attacked by Vikings or whatever. Then I set an objective and go for it. (ie, attacked by Persians just the other day so I resolve to use my excessive productive might to Battleship/Cruise Msl their units to death. Then I capture a few cities by helicopter so I can get peace.)

Same here, except I still subvert cities with spies. It's the only way to get more territory under the best government, democracy.

I usually play defensively, but there comes a time when a bit of force is in order. During these times, I go from Democracy to Feudalism and set out to smite the realm(s) that irritate me.

play defensive until you get SoL built then turn fundie, kill all in path, leave one city in a desolate place. Return to being peaceful while you teraform the world and populate it with your followers.

I don't fear wars, but in the early game I don't start them by myself without an important reason. Because I'm very very very expansionistic my defence is quiet weak in the beginning. But during my groth I build only a few defence units. Cities that are not needed for settler-production usally build the strongest and fastest offensiv units that is available. In the later game I "play" with my enemies(if they aren't too strong). If I have to fight a real hard war I am extremly offensiv(I try to destroy the enemies army in his own territory). I only use a few defence units on keypoint on our border or to protect taken cities.

im a mercantilist and expansionist until i run out of room to expand. then i go offensive. so i voted defensive because that is how i am most of the game. i actually build almost no military at all. diplomats protect my empire.

Interesting replies.
I have played all sorts of ways, and now I play a fairly balanced(slightly tipped to peaceful) style of play. However, if a civ makes an early war with me, I will make sure I destroy them before the END.

I was looking for the neither, varies and other options. I'll too often build too few offensive units, too few defensive units and in fact have rather nice cities with nobody home. In fact it seems like I'll lose a city to surprise barbs every other game nowadays.

I generally postpone offensive forays until tactics and sometimes am able to postpone offensive conflict until the use of modern units.

Yes, it is not a good idea to do so. I'd rather have tanks vs their chariots (or more likely pikemen, knights or muskets). I like to keep my rep in good condition, so I usually try to provoke my opponants into war.

More Aggressive than the AI ... that's the spice of this game. But only if I can afford it.

But of course I have to go offensive when those stupid [insert civ] launch the spaceship before me. Then I buy some tanks and howies, and go for their capital. (I had to do that in my last game.) But that's usually the only times I am the agressor.

I most certainly have a tendacy to be aggressive, militaristic , and expansionistic

however, each game is different, and i usually goad the ai into starting wars by demanding tribute all the time.

I actually like being at war while expanding....the barbs just aren't enough of a threat, and wandering around with sets (even escorted) and having an enemy your at war with kill them is sadistically realistic....

i have no problems with the ai giving me a bloody nose, keeps me humble and fuels my anger

I'm deffensive early in the game, I try to expand my empire peacefully. Also, the early "offensive" units suck .
After I discover tactics, my game style becomes more offensive.
