GameSpy Civ 4 preview

Sid doesn't even know. (Seriously!) Didn't he change them to hammers for Colonization? Too late! Like the QWERTY keyboard, it's too darned late to fix it now. It's imprinted on the culture. We'll be dealing with Shields until the end of time.

Anybody calling them hammers in Civ4... Well, maybe they can, but old timers will still say Shields, and then somebody will have to explain why to the newbies. What a mess.

As long as they are blue, though, my brain can process them correctly. Blue shields forever. If they make the hammers red or some other nonsense, there may be civil unrest outside Firaxis headquarters.

Best post of the month

I don't know if anyone else thinks like me, but I personally like riots.
It lets you know when a city needs attention. At least I hope when an unhappy citizen stops working, you will know it, to be able to do something about it.
Anyway, riots are better...

" "The shields never really made sense. Why do you build things from shields?" Smith asks. That the question never occurred to me is a testament to how well Civilization has conditioned gamers. "
hooray! we used to make tanks with shields, now they are made of hammers! :crazyeye:

Re: saltpeter not being required for gunpowder: as long as there is some prerequisite, this is okay. And as long as it is logical. I mean, with the game supposedly being as moddable as it is, if the requirement for gunpowder is daffodils, we can change that into salpeter, right?

Re: Cities not rioting, but unhappy workers simply not working: I'm not sure thta I'm terribly happy with this. I liked the challenge of managing a far flung empire. It shouldn't be easy. Ok, so the penaly has changed. And I can accept that we are not going to get a pop up for every unhasppy worker, but what about a screen where we could check the unhappiness level of cities? Or perhaps some sort of filter where we could determine what % or level of unhappy workers is brought to our attention?

"And there are minor changes, such as the shields being turned into hammers."
"Gunpowder units no longer require saltpeter and Firaxis will probably give players a technology to synthesize oil."
"Cities don't riot anymore, but unhappy workers simply stop working."
Even if saltpeter will be eliminated from the resource grab-bag, perhaps there ought to be some provision for the development of true "high explosives" (TNT)... Alfred Nobel? This is gunpowder "going to the next level" before nuclear fission.

The first thing we should do is mod the hammers back to shields

No offense, but why??? Shields make no sense. When i first started playin i was confused what they were....'Oh, they aren't an indiciation for how strong my army is???"

This makes sense......Finally!!!! :crazyeye:

Or you can save up your Great People and trade them in groups for Golden Ages.

Ok, did anyone else see this? Does this many you can have multiple Golden Ages? And how would that work, would unique units (have they said anything about UUs?) and wonders still trigger GAs?

imagine...what would happen to hammering someone!?!? :crazyeye:
Wonder what shorthand nickname will people come up with to refer to them on the boards...

"hammer" is a two syllable word and kind of awkward ...(like barracks has been shortened to rax)...

... will they start referring to them as whacks (whack-a mole), bonks, hams? :crazyeye: ;)

At least we have the smilie for them already.... :hammer::hammer::hammer:

I think they were originally hammers because in civ1, teh graphics werent sufficiently high resolution to make a easily recognisable differnece between hammers and (trade) arrows. good job on finally changing the graphic to fit with current computer graphics resolutoion.

Regarding saltpetre, the big dirty secret is that it is probably one of the most trivially easy substances in the world to make if you know how. The principal ingredient in the process is excrement, which is not exactly in short supply anywhere. Personally, I feel there should always be a current technology defensive infantry unit for you to build, regardless of resources.

"I think they were originally hammers because in civ1, teh graphics werent sufficiently high resolution to make a easily recognisable differnece between hammers and (trade) arrows."

That, and things as simple as shields and arrows were about the only thing you could do that small. Remember, it was not only lesser resolution but often played on 13" TV sets for monitors! :D Not that I did anything like that ... :D

Why has nobody asked about the need for Civ to have some type of battlenet feature? right now gamespy does a crapy job of it and certainly doesnt provide the fetures that other in-game nets provide. ie:automaitcally reporting and keeping track of game results in a ladder format.

Civ 4 needs a self-contained ladder net
