In the database he's coded to have a higher than normal chance of rolling Nuke Lover.

this does not surprise me at all XD. he had the nuke happy hidden agenda in my last game. gotta love how devs code in these amusing little quirks <3.

It was due to a bug in an earlier release apparently.... his love was so good it went into the minuses and rolled round to 99 and he nuked you. Something like that.

yeah, back in civ 1, his aggression was set at 1, but when you switched to democracy, that reduced a leader's aggression by 2. And they didn't bounds-check, so Gandhi rolled over to -1, which was interpreted as 254 in the game, meaning he would turn into a raging lunatic. And every since then, Nuclear Gandhi has been a recurring civ meme.

In 1989, there was a video game called Nuclear War. A parody of Gandhi is playable and yes, the game involves nuking other players.

That game preceded Civ I.
