. It's called workfare. People on it recieve below minimum wage income, partly from the company they are working at and partly from welfare. I don't like workfare it's just another way to extend a person's stay on welfare and it teaches more dependancy. The way welfare works here few people will have to attend workfare, they only crack down on what is called "employables". Employables are white people between the ages of 18-40. Social workers have no desire to weed out those who scam the system. The more people on welfare - the more money their department recieves - the better computers and paycheques they get. That's the way every government funded program works.

Maybe some people grow dependant on workfare....if so, then there should be some kind of time limit....though, below minimum wage around here isn't going to get you much more than a cardboard box. However, the thought of getting some kind of production out of it sounds good. Bureaus full of people get in the way a lot of the time.....which happens almost everywhere. So...its got to get cleaned up. It's not impossible.

I live in Alberta, Canada. In Alberta the cleaning up has been done. When Ralph Klien (a neoconservative) was elected he cracked down on government. They added a useless one week job search training program to welfare before you can get a cheque. They created a system of determining who can get the cheques for how long.
The first is employables that are cut off after three months, unless they go to workfare or are in drug/alchohol treatment. Then you've got the semi-employables, white men over fourty, single women with no kids, non-white men, they get three months but can get extensions. Then you have people who are sick they can get over three months with a doctor's approval. Then you have women with kids as long as they keep popping out babies and as long as they can confirm the father(s) of the kids so welfare can go after them for child support they can get a cheque. Then there is the holy grail that all bums go for called assured income for the severly handicapped, this is supposed to be for people who are so ill they can never work. Then there is unemployment insurance given out by the federal government with a whole other set of rules. Complicated system

.I just read up on workfare, some. Wow, that's juicier than slavery. Lay off some bottom rung employees, replace them with government subsidised workfarers. These workfarers may be fired without cause at any time, they know it, and they know they'll have zero mercy from the system for three months after quitting or being fired - punishment, I guess. Grind 'em down, they're slaves. Wow. And the employer only pays half their less-than-minimum wages? Where do I apply for some of these workfarers for my own business?

Sean Lindstrom, stop using the word "slave" falsely. When enough people do that the word loses its original meaning, and suddenly means something else, like eg racism (often used when the word xenophobe or "foreign-hater" should be used). Using words wrongly creates caos in the language.
The situation you describe is not slavery, they have the free choice to get off their lazy behinds and get a job, don't they? They also have a choice to leech off relatives or friends, the points is that they are not confined to a camp and shot if they escape.

I too am outraged over such a reality evading policy.
Clearly, workfare and all forms of social assistance should be eliminated.
