GeForce FX 5200 Forced Shaders... Performance Issues et cetera.

I've had annoying framerate issues since the game came out and have been trying SINCE it came out to get it to run better, with varying degrees of success. Despite my troubles I absolutely love the game and have probably invested 30 hours into it.

Okay, so, I just upgraded to 1 GB of RAM going up from 512. I even got some fancy Corsair gaming RAM with a huge heatsink and LED memory usage indicators and such.

It didn't help THAT much (even with memsaver option turned on and graphic settings set to low), but then I found out about the RivaTuner tool. I have a GeForce FX 5200, and have seen many people have better performance when they force the shaders to 1.1 on both. I tried this and it's worked very well. My performance, while not perfect, is much better. Especially with the RAM upgrade.

My problem is this - changing my vid card's shader settings to 1.1 makes all of my other games run slow and also makes them look terrible. It is QUITE a pain to have to change back to the default shader settings every time I want to play a non-Civ game because it requires a full computer restart.

Does anyone know of a way I can work around this? Civ runs TERRIBLY unless I put the shader settings to 1.1, and then it becomes playable, and I really hate having to switch back and forth with a comp restart in between every time.

Here's my DXDiag if anyone needs to look at it. If anyone has any general performance tweaks or settings I can change in order to stop having to use 1.1 shaders that would be great too. I just need some advice on my situation overall.

Sorry for the double post, but another thing occurred to me. Are the trees supposed to be swaying and animated with low graphics settings?

I just have the pixel shaders down to 1.1, left the vertex shaders on 'no override'. Have the same card and have no problems with any other app. Might be worth a shot at those settings.

What kind of performance do you get out of Civ 4 with the 5200? Also, what sort of rig do you have?

FX5200 is not the best graphics to play civ 4 on, you have a 64-bit cpu! its like having a snail (The graphics) trying to race a ferrari (The cpu).

A 6800 would do the trick.

The more speed you would get by upgrading would be great!
