Sorry if this is old news, but a websearch didn't turn anything up for me so I thought I'd post it:

For anyone wondering what the original source is for using hammers and anvils to represent resources, the idea is from Master of Orion II. Which is still a great game.

Looking forward to Civ IV coming out on the mac so I can check it out.

I get the newbie award. I was trying to post this thread in the general forum but somehow got Strategy instead. Sorry folks.

Welcom to Civfanatics! :band:

Master of Orion II, Battle at Antares was a great game from 1996. It's still a nice game. However, it is not the first game that used hammers and anvils to depict production. The game Master of Magic from 1994, which was also a great game, already used the hammer and anvil to depict production. And maybe, there were even older games that used it that I have never played. It's quite a natural way to depict production.

i want a master of magic II!
You won't believe it, but i still play MoM!
i like the ability to cast spells myself! Who needs units when you can have heroes?...
PLEEEAAAASEEEE someone! make a new version

I hold Master of Orion II as the best game ever made with Total Annihilation as a close second.

Other great games are Battle Isle II, Heroes of Might and Magic I-IV, Master of Magic, Age of Mythology, Championship Manager (now Football Manager)

All in my humble opinion ofcourse

i would like to play moo 2 but it doesn't work anymore on modern computer (at least on mine, winxp s2).
That game was prob the best spaceCiv of all times.
I remember building those death star romping through ennemy fleet using that mighty weapon i don't remeber the name.

There are plenty of options available to you to help with that, if it doesn't work in WinXP or in winXP with the compatibility modes.

DOSBox is a DOS emulator based on FreeDOS, specifically optimized for old DOS game. Try it out. (google for it, I forgot the URL lol). Worked well for me when I wanted to play Star Control I a year or two ago... ;)

The great thing about moo ii (psilons/creative aside - which I found boring) was that (similiar to civIV) you could use many many different strategies to win the game. My favorite was to use HighGravity plus combat bonuses to capture anteran raiders early in the the game to salvage late game tech.

Hammers and anvils to represent production goes back further than PCs, I can't think of any specifics offhand but I'm sure it was used in some of the old Avalon Hill board games back in the '60s and '70s, and in concept probably goes further.

I'd like Moo2 better if the MM wasn't so irritating later on and if the AI could design ships to save it's life. When both of us have a similar number and size of similar tech ships, I know I'm going to just slaughter them, probably with no losses. I took to playing the game without ship design on, which makes it a lot harder but also takes away one of the more intricate parts of the game. That was a fun game though.

MOO II introduced some good improvements but suffered from too much MM and balance issues, IMO.
MOO needs some BIOS options tweaked on modern PC's but still works on winxp sp2 and is still an engrossing addictive game - just don't laugh at the graphics!
