German Unique power question

It says he get to upgrade your units after the industrial age for free. Does that mean that once its the industrial age you can upgrade all your units as much as you want (so look as they're aren't up to date) until the end of the game? Or you can only do to to one unit? Or once you update a unit, when the updated unit gets outdated as well, can you upgrade it again?

If you can upgrade as much as you want, this would be my German strategy when I first play as them:

Save up all great people until the industrial age.

Conquer Italy first, then Greece. Finally, France. Realistically, I'd barely accomplish this by 1870(since I have to worry about Italy and Greece first).

After taking them out by 1870 the industrial age should be about ready to begin. Then I can unleash by terror. Not only would I get my unique unit (Panzar) but I can upgrade my entire army to it for free. The ever-flowing golden ages wouldn't hurt me either.

What do you guys think?

Yeah you can keep upgrading the units when you enter industrial age, getting the first uhv is not that hard though the second one can be.

Correction: you won't be able to upgrade anything to Panzer, since it is armor unit and must be built. Ideally, by the time you get Industrialism no one else would have it, so you will fight mainly infantry and lesser unit, and a panzer is not better than a normal tank against infantry.

Still, the German UP is one of the best for a warmonger (have to acknowledge the Persians and the Mongols are still competitive)

So if I can't upgrade them to a Panzer then what would I upgrade them too instead?

If I am not mistaken the German UP says Industrialism technology not Industrial Age.

Mele units upgrade to Infantry, Mounted units upgrade to Helicopters (which come late).

If you wait till 1870 to go for England and Russia it might be too late. I just finished a game of German UHV. Try getting France early (maybe 50 - 60 turns after spawn). Then Rome as soon as you get several Trebuchets.

Greece is tricky since you will have to either fight Turkey or compete culturally. The second is hard because of their horrific UP.

The key for the rest is to keep huge tech lead. England had Infantry in the early 1800, but those were no match for my combined Panzer/Bomber army. Russia had only Musketman and Vikings had Longbowmen since they collapsed and then respawned again.
