What I want is any tips for playing 1upt for someone more used to Civ 4.

-----

Wot no stacks ? well that certainly changes things. gone are my eight catapault and ten unit stacks. but I find they all get in the way of each other. especially if they are coming from different corners of the Map. it takes me 2 turns to get them all attacking simultaneously.

its different (well, different can be good)

but whats the best approach ?

which units should attack first.

I send in my warriors two or three at a time. I pull them back if they get bombarded by the city and their hit points fall to low. otherwise they die and it take ages to build units.

i keep the archers back a bit as they have good range

I have loads less units on the map than I did in Civ IV but ensure that, as far as possible, they all the best units available because otherwise they are just taking up space.

any help appreciated.

I recommend sending in your entire army at once. Preferably, strong melee units first with ranged units behind. Overwhelming the enemy usually works.

When you are marching the units in, they take less bombard damage on hills and in forests. Moving them in can be pretty challenging, so you need to know where you are going to move them before you get units stuck within the two tile bombard radius.

I would go in with swordsman/catapults over warrior/archer. No iron? I don't know what you do then. Trade for iron and then conquer someone that has it. Spearman/archer seems pretty weak. 4 early triremes can be good with a swordsman to finish off the city. Maybe a warrior can finish off a city? I don't know.

Longswords are really effective.

Like the first responder said, more numbers attacking the city is better. If you limp a warrior up there, he will be in yellow before he even has a chance to attack and then you have to retreat and once you retreat it can be a not enjoyable gameplay experience because the opponent produces more units and defenses in the mean time.

I won't move anything into a city's attack range until I have enough there to successfully siege it.

Won't use my melee units until the city's ready to fall either. That way I'm not wasting time healing several units. The unit that took the city is healing in it while the others move to the next city.

thanks chaps

i had given up hope of a reply

SO what are you using to grind out the city defences

Siege weapons: Catapults, etc.

2 or 3 of these (age appropriate) will bring the city defenses down in a couple of turns.
