[GS] Getting my religion back on my cities

I started a game with Khmer and I wanted to go for a religion victory. I managed to found a religion and spread it between all my cities.
Unfortunately another religion was brought into my region and it "conquered" all my cities.
Now I cannot create religious units for my initial religion, only for the main one, which is not the one I founded.

Is it even possible at all, to recover my religion and how could I achieve it?

Contrary to Civilization V, Holy city can't recover naturally from being converted. It is possible to recover by doing the Temple of Mahabodhi that will give you 2 Apostles of your religion. Same thing with Stonehedge that will generate 1 Apostle of your religion if you have one (1 Prophet if you don't). I don't know if the Kotoku-In will generate 4 Monks of your religion, I am pretty sure of not. Papal Primacy allow you to convert City-State with Envoy, then you can conquer, build a Holy Site and produce religious units.

In GS, a new unit may allow you to convert a city to your religion: Rock Band, with a special promotion. Then, you will have to invade it, and produce religious units to convert back your cities.

Thanks for the info. It seems I have several options. Better go for building because grieving after DoW are quite hard right now :/

It is possible to recover by doing the Temple of Mahabodhi that will give you 2 Apostles of your religion.

I have always wondered if this was the case, or if it would give you apostles that are the religion of what the city is currently.
