I am playing my game and have probably about 7 cities but I am still under a 100 gold! it keeps going down too! everytime I get close to zero I have to sell something. I have a couple wonders already but I dont know what else to do. Does trade have something to do with it?

have you tried adjusting your tax rate in the domestic advisor screen? Trade helps to generate income, esp trading techs and resources. Also, income is dependent upon government type. In short, more advanced forms of government generate more commerce, which gets split between science, taxes and luxury rate. Build marketplaces and later banks.

Build roads on the tiles your cities are using. Put your citizens to work on coastal and river tiles.
