Is there any good way to achieve total control over your island, i.e. staging a sort of 'barbarian holocaust'? :goodjob:

'cuz I've started playing as the greeks on a small map, with the luck (?) of being alone on one of the two mayor islands. ;)

If it wasn't for the barbians who constantly attacks my cities, I'd be really happy. ;)

I've noticed that it's only one village left, on my island. Would it do the trick if I.. pay a visite? ;)

Or will the settlements continue popping up until I've accomplished a total domination with enough cultural influence...?  :(

Yeah..Barbs stop showing up when your culture borders don't give them anywhere to land. At least the have for me.

Far and AWAY the best solution to getting rid of barbarians: don't!! Fortify a spearman on some defensive terrain next to the camp, and let him attack you every other turn. An ideal breeding ground for a Great Leader. Think about it: zero diplomatic cost, zero war weariness, and you pretty much always win. And a GL every 32 turns, on average. 24, if you're militaristic. That will feel like nothing sometimes (cause it's random), but in reality that's a ton of GL's.

That's not to say you should never, ever eliminate a barb camp, but your goal should be to spawn some nice, well-located, out-of-the-way camps instead of trying to eliminate the barbs altogether. I would even go so far as to settle near the camp--because if you don't, the moron AI will. Then you can have two spearmen, who can serve double-duty in that city under Despotism.

Barbarians only seem to set up camp in places where you cant see them. In your case you will want to place a warrior watching the areas of the island that are not in your cultural borders. So smash the village and set up some pickets and you should be fine. However in the past in a well fortified area with a military civilization I have let the barbarian roam my land and attack my cities. This makes it so that when another civilization shows up most if not all of my defenders are elite!

Cheers and good luck with your barbarian problem :)

Tetley,

Maybe I misunderstood, but you cannot get GLs from Barbs...just Elites..which is nice..but, personally I have never gotten a GL from barbs ever.

Me neither... Even though one spearman once fended off about a dozen horsemen...

What level are you playing at, Tetley?

As someone pointed out, barbarians only appear in land that you no units or cities can see.

That is true, but with a caveat - if only a non-combat unit (worker, settler, scout) can see the land, they can still appear.

I actually like to keep a spawn spot or two available to give my units a chance to be promoted.

However, contrary to what a previous poster said, I don't believe Leaders can be generated from combat with barbarians. In most games, if there is a crappy little peninsual, I purposely don't station someone that can see the end so camps will be generated. I sometimes keep it that way for a long, long time and have lots of battles but have never seen a leader generated from combat with a barbarian.

If you really want to keep them off your backs, just station units so there isn't any land that isn't being observed by a combat unit or city and there won't be any place for them to appear.

I'm playing Monarch now, and beaten Deity. I've most definitely gotten GL's from barbs, and it's been a game-winner, courtesy of the Forbidden Palace.

To the person who beat off a dozen horsemen and no GL: you have a 1-in-16 chance of getting a GL. 1 in 12 if you're militaristic. So beating 12 horsemen and no GL is very plausible.

Tetley, where did you get your 1-16/1-12 stats? I have heard from others who said they have gotten GLS from Barbs, but I still have not had that pleasure. Heck, I am currently playing as the Chinese. I have been at war the entire game and I have wiped out the Greeks and the Romans, and I have only gotten one GL… I can never seem to get them, so many elite troops, so few GLs. How sad…

I got the 1/16 and 1/12 stats from the forum here. Someone said it's like a 6.6% chance of a GL, or 8.25% if you're militaristic. So, take that info FWIW. I don't know if it's right or wrong. I just assumed they were right and got 1/16 and 1/12 from those percents.

Sometimes it sure does feel like a lot less than that, but when I analyze my games I realize that I'm just not doing combat--and winning--with elites often as I think.
