I saw what looked a bit like settlers wander into my territory. I thought `they aren`t going to get much here` siince my area was huge. But then they stopped and started digging right in my lands. They were archaeologists.

Is there no way I can tell them to stop digging up my history?

Also bashing hammers into the ground is not good archaoelogy- They must stop it!

I don't recall ATM if archaeologists require open borders, otherwise all I can recommend is that you occupy the sites (unless a DOW is in the cards).

Of course, the Archaeology tech is helpful ...

There are two things you can do:
1. Close your borders to the excavating AI. Archaeologists can only work within your territory if you've granted the AI access to your territory.
2. Station a unit on top of each Antiquities Site in your territory. The intruders can't dig if they can't reach the tile.

I know you can tell them not to, as I told Gandhi not to a couple of games ago, though he refused to stop. We were friends if that matters. The option is at least there at some point, presumably after they've dug up at least one. Iirc it's under the discuss diplomatic option.

If he refuse to leave your history, then you should refuse to spare his life!

Closed borders protected from archeologist (but not jehovian witness). Also opened borders cost like 2GPT. So you can probably spare it only one way around.

Even sticking a worker on top of your antiquity sites will work, since the archaeologist can't occupy the same space and obviously can't kill the worker.

I place units on top of my antiquity sites if he's already there you could kill him

This. Once I unlock archeologists I'll immediately put units on all my sites, send my archeologists to grab everything I can outside my territory, then decide, based on how many artifacts I got from neutral/foreign lands which of my own sites I'm going to turn into heritage sites, and which to extract, if any.

Thanks fellas. I didn`t realise granting open borders was also a mild invitation to digging up my land as well.
By the way, I don`t have archaelogy at the time so I wasn`t even certain what was going on. It also means I can`t block the sites since I don`t know where they are.

Yep, that's a tough one. Archaeologists' high move makes it difficult to corral them, so your best bet is to close those borders until you hit Archaeology.

just did this to the comp as ghandi ;-) bought open borders cheap and went indiana jones on him... stole all of his artifacts.

Some of my most fun imaginary Civ V stories concern Archaeologists' adventures. In one game where I was gunning for a cultural victory, I had secured open borders with Attila, who was about to be annihilated by Korea. Korea happened to be my main rival for the victory, and also hated my guts and under no circumstances would grant me open borders. (Our militaries were about the same.) I sent out archaeologists across the continent to dig up Attila's artifacts, dodging the various sieges and skirmishes between his troops and Korea, only to have Sejong lay siege to THREE of Attila's cities with borders enclosing dig sites. It was a tense time of rushing to dig up the artifacts before the cities fell, and it was fun to imagine my Dr. Joneses dodging enemy gunfire, scurrying from cover to cover, and conducting clandestine digs right under the noses of the besieging troops -- who, again, belonged to my main cultural rival. Rather like Indy's digging up the Ark in the midst of the Nazis in "Raiders".

In the end, I dug out two of the three artifacts before the cities fell. The remaining one was just two turns away when the city transferred to Sejong and booted my Indy out. ...but then Sejong chose to raze the city, so I was able to sneak back in a few turns later and complete the dig, right next to the smoldering ruins of the nearby city.

Fun stuff.

They do need to have open borders to enter, I think...

Definitely should if it doesn't. :(

I actually like this mechanic in Civ 5 because it`s actually quite true to life (shock, horror), in the 18th\19th\20th century cowboy archaeologists did indeed wander into other people`s lands, without express permission, and dig up other people`s history for mostly their own gain. Some countries, such as Egypt, had to fight quite hard to stop other nations stealing their history.

So I give a thumbs up to the Devs for this one.

They certainly need open borders to send the diggers in. There can be a slight hitch where you start digging close to open border territory and the territory spreads before you recover the item. Then you get accused of stealing - even if the item belongs to a different Civ.

And it is really great where you find a site where you already have an academy down- do you destroy the academy or what? And if you don't you need to permanently station a unit on it otherwise the AI will wreck your site and steal your beads.

Re: putting units on top of antiquity sites

Don't forget that the Exploration finisher lets you (or the AI) see hidden antiquity sites.

Love it! I'll never look at one of my Indie's the same again!

You can let them work on digging your history for a while actually :p. Just do it when the open borders is about to expire and then it will kick out their archaeologists out of your civ. The sites will therefore already be nearly finished so as soon as your archy gets there you will get the benefit immediately

Sounds risky. You'd have to calculate how long the archeologist needed to dig (depending on woods, jungle, or open) and how long your open borders agreement had left to run. Personally I wouldn't run the risk, sounds like too much. You can always send a worker to chop down jungle or woods to speed things up.
